The UNIVAC Full Form is Universal Automatic Computer. John Presper Eckert and John Mauchly, two talented designers, created it. This particular type of computer could only process letters and numbers. We can hardly imagine our lives today without computers. That is because we are in a digital age, and computers are an integral part of our daily lives. Computers, however, have had a very interesting history. UNIVAC was the name of the first type of commercial computer.

Full Form of UNIVAC

Both John Presper Eckert and John Mauchly graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and worked on designing the ENIAC computer for the US during World War 2. Years later, the partners delivered the UNIVAC full form as a stored-program computer.

The speed of UNIVAC was thousands of times faster than that of its rivals, but more significantly, it was one of the first stored program computers. This meant that it was capable of gathering and managing data using magnetic tape rather than punch cards. Magnetic tape can store and access up to one million characters.

  • There was no operating system offered by UNIVAC. On a UNISERVO, operators loaded a program tape that the processor logic could have loaded automatically.
  • The program would be launched after mounting the appropriate source and output data tapes.
  • The offline printer or, more commonly, short-term storage was used to process the results tapes before updating them with the subsequent batch of data generated on the offline card to the tape unit.
  • The UNIVAC I was the country’s first general-purpose digital electronic computer intended for business use.
  • As the speed of sound in mercury varies with temperature, the temperature of the mercury delay-line memory tank was carefully regulated.
  • Many hours might pass after a power outage before the temperature stabilizes.
