The terms DSP, SP, DGP, ASP and ACP are different ranks allotted to people in the police department. The full forms for these ranks are as follows:

SP – Superintendent of Police

ASP – Assistant Superintendent of Police

DGP – Director General of Police

DSP – Deputy Superintendent of Police

ACP – Assistant Commissioner of Police

Now, let’s dive deeper and try to understand what these roles mean.

DGP or Director General of Police:

Also known as the State Police Chief, the DGP is the highest ranked officer across all Indian States as well as Union Territories. The DGPs hold a 3-star rank and can have appointments in Central Government organisations that include the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and even the Director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). They are selected from the Indian Police Service (IPS) and are appointed by the cabinet.

SP or Superintendent of Police:

The Superintendent of Police acts as the head of the police force for a whole district. The SP heads all the constables and other police officers in a district and is responsible for maintaining order in that particular district. Lastly, they also work to maintain discipline among the officers that work under them.

DSP or Deputy Superintendent of Police:

The rank of DSP was first introduced by the British Empire in India and is one of the highest ranking police officers in any state or Union Territory (UT). It is the responsibility of a DSP to manage the authorised police stations of the state alongside the SP.

ASP or Assistant Superintendent of Police:

ASP stands for the Assistant Superintendent of Police, which is a role that assists the SP in handling a district’s work. The ASP is the beginning rank for all Indian Police Service or IPS officers and is a probationary rank in the Indian police department.

ACP or Assistant Commissioner of Police:

The Assistant Commissioner of Police and the DSP hold similar powers but the ACP is appointed in a metropolitan city. The ACP is the highest ranked office in a particular city and is responsible for the day to day work of police officers there. There can be multiple ACPs in a metro city.
