What is the Composition of Panchayat Samiti?

The Panchayat Samiti is composed of all of the Block’s MPs, MLAs, and MLCs, as well as all of the Sarpanches (Mukhias) or Chairpersons of the Gram Panchayats, and Members of Zila Parishad who were elected from that Block. Panchayat Samiti is an intermediate tehsil (Taluka/Mandal) level rural local government (panchayat) entity in India.

Rural development is one of the key purposes of the Panchayati Raj, which has been implemented in all Indian states with the exception of Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Mizoram, as well as all Union Territories with the exception of Delhi.

These territories include tribal regions and scheduled areas in the states of Manipur, which has a district council, and West Bengal’s Darjeeling district, which has a Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council.

  • The Samiti is elected for five years and is led by a chairman and deputy chairman who are elected by the Panchayat Samiti members.
  • The remaining gram panchayats are overseen by one sarpanch samiti.
  • It serves as a liaison between the district panchayat and the gram panchayat.
