What is Swaran Singh Committee?

Swaran Singh Committee was set up after the declaration of national emergency by Indira Gandhi in 1976. Under the chairmanship of Sardar Swaran Singh, the committee was entrusted with the task of figuring out the question of amending the constitution of India. The committee introduced several amendments to the constitution, the details of which are given below.

Define Swaran Singh Committee?

Swaran Singh Committee recommended several changes in the constitution, which were accepted by the Congress government. Some of the amendments in the constitution included the following -

  • Change in the Preamble of the constitution under the 42nd amendment, which was passed in the year 1976, and came into effect on 03 January 1977.
  • The inclusion of a chapter on fundamental duties.
