What is Oxygen Cycle? Explain with Diagram

By Ritika Pant|Updated : August 1st, 2022

The oxygen cycle is the cycle of oxygen wherein oxygen gets transferred between living systems and the environment, also referred to as the biogeochemical cycle. The process helps to maintain an adequate level of oxygen in the air. Therefore, the oxygen cycle process is highly critical.

Deposition of H2O or water molecules by sunlight during Photosynthesis produces a large amount of oxygen. The oxygen gets liberated into the atmosphere through the Respiration (breathing) processes or via the movement of water, known as transpiration.

The oxygen cycle is a crucial part of the Class 9 Biology syllabus. The main uses of oxygen are mentioned below:

  • It is the main by-product of Photosynthesis.
  • It is necessary for the oxidation process of carbohydrates that ultimately releases energy, carbon dioxide and water.
  • Oxygen is found in a variety of forms and combinations with other chemicals.
  • It combines with nitrogen to form nitrates.
  • Oxygen also blends with other elements to create oxides, such as iron oxide and aluminium oxide.

FAQs on What Is Oxygen Cycle

  • The oxygen cycle is a topic of the Biology syllabus for Class 9. The process involves the movement of oxygen from the atmosphere to the earth and vice versa. Plants utilise carbon dioxide and release oxygen during Photosynthesis, which the animals use for Respiration.

  • The Oxygen Cycle takes place with plants and Photosynthesis. The first step is Photosynthesis (wherein plants make their food), the second step is Respiration (when plants release oxygen), and finally, the carbon dioxide breathed out by the living organisms is taken up by plants for Photosynthesis. The cycle gets repeated.
