Marble cancer refers to an event of corrosion of monuments, statues, and buildings because of acid rain. The acid rain damages the marble through the action of nitric acid and sulphuric acid.

The acid rain degrades the marble as the acid precipitation reacts with the carbonate of marble. The rain which has elevated levels of hydrogen ions, sulphuric or nitric acid is referred to as Acid rain. The harmful gases such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are discharged into the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels and from volcanoes. The pH scale is used for measuring the acidity of acid rain. The pH value of acid rain falls between 4.2 and 4.4. On the other hand, the pH scale for normal rain is 5.6.
