What is Kal Baisakhi?

Kal Baisakhi or Kaal Baisakhi is a season in the West Bengal.This is a season for localised thunderstorms associated with violent winds and torrential downpours, often accompanied by hail. The storm decreases the temperature and may bring light rain and a cool breeze. It is very common in northern India in the month of May.

Effects of Kal Baisakhi (Kaal Baisakhi)

Kal Baisakhi usually forms from April till the monsoon and establishes itself over North-East India. The effects of Kaal Baisakhi are as follows:

  • waterlogging roads due to heavy rainfall.
  • destruction by uprooting trees due to gale winds.
  • damages crops by hailstorms.
  • extremely helpful for Kharif crops like jute, paddy, etc.
  • the dry soils receive rainfall for the development of the crops.
