Kaal Baisakhi is a season for isolated thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds and torrential downpours, which are frequently accompanied by hail. Kal Baisakhi, also known as Kaal Baisakhi, is a season in West Bengal. The storm lowers the temperature and may bring light showers and a refreshing wind. In the month of May, it is particularly prevalent in northern India. However, similar seasons occur in Southern India as well and are called by different names.

Effects of Kal Baisakhi

Kal Baisakhi usually begins in the month of April till the monsoon and establishes itself over North-East India. The effects of Kaal Baisakhi are as follows:

  • Waterlogging of roads due to heavy rainfall.
  • Extremely helpful for Kharif crops like jute, paddy, etc.
  • Damages crops by hailstorms.
  • The dry soils receive rainfall for the development of the crops.
  • Destruction by uprooting trees due to gale winds.

Characteristics of Kal Baisakhi

Pre-monsoon rains are typical at the end of the summer season, particularly in Kerala and Karnataka. Kal Baishakhi, often referred to as mango showers, aids in the early ripening of mangoes. Hence, although the season can be inconvenient for people due to the severe effects that are mentioned above, it also brings some joy.

Kal Baisakhi is characterized by isolated downpours, high gusts, torrential rains, and hailstorms. Kaal baishakhi occurs from March till the monsoon sets over northeast India, with increasing frequency. During this season, strong thunderstorms may be seen in the northeastern states of Odisha, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Assam, and West Bengal.
