Folding is a kind of earth movement caused by the horizontal compression of rock layers by the earth's internal forces along plate boundaries. Anticlines are the name for up folds, and Synclines are the name for downfolds. The Himalayan Mountains, the Alps, etc., were created through folding.

Fold Meaning and Definition in Geology

  • Stratified rocks were initially created from sediments laid down in flat, horizontal sheets, but in some areas, the strata have been distorted and are no longer horizontal.
  • On the Earth's surface, massive folds frequently have their tops eroded, revealing the inclined strata's cross sections.
  • Folds are typically categorized based on the orientation of their axes and how they appear in cross sections perpendicular to the fold's trend.
  • The surface or plane that divides a fold as symmetrically as feasible is known as the axial plane.
  • The axial plane could be straight, vertical, or slanted at any angle. The point where the axial plane and one of the strata that make up the fold intersect is known as the fold's axis.
  • The plunge is the axis' inclination angle, measured about the horizontal.
  • The flanks, limbs, or slopes of a fold are the parts of the fold that lie between adjacent axes.
