A group of fish is called a school. A school of fish belongs to the same species. They move in unison while swimming. Eighty percent of the known fish species are found in schools. When they swim with their families, fish migrate more quickly in the water, which helps reduce the friction between their bodies and the water.

Group of Fish

There are reasons for fish to move to a school. Most fishes move in groups or schools. Predators are always startled and alarmed by the large bulk. Schooling fish resemble a single, enormous species when they travel in a perfect pattern.

  • About one-quarter of all species of fish build shoals for their entire lives and for about half of their lives.
  • Fish behavior provides many benefits including avoidance from predators (by better identification of predators and reducing the likelihood of individual capture).
  • Shoaling behavior of fish also helps in finding a mate.
  • It is also likely that fish benefit from shoal membership through increased hydrodynamic efficiency.
  • Fish use several traits to select shoal mates.
  • They generally prefer shoal mates similar in size and appearance to their species, large shoals, healthy fish, and kin.
