What is 12th Schedule of the Indian Constitution?

There are 12 schedules in our Indian Constitution each containing laws about different areas such as States and Union Territories, Houses of Parliament, President, Union Ministers, Tribal areas, Legislative lists, etc. The 12th Schedule of the Indian Constitution talks about the provisions specifying powers, responsibilities, and authority of Municipalities. There are 18 subjects listed in it. Schedule 12 of the Indian Constitution was added in 1992 by the 74th Amendment Act.

Define Schedule 12 of the Indian Constitution

Our Indian Constitution originally had 8 schedules when it was implemented in 1950, but later by certain amendments, there are 12 schedules in the Constitution at present. Schedule 12 of the Indian Constitution was added by the 74th Amendment Act of 1992 which enlists 18 matters as listed below:

  1. Urban planning including town planning
  2. Regulation of the use of land and construction of buildings.
  3. Economic and social development planning
  4. Fire services
  5. Urban poverty alleviation
  6. Supply of water for domestic, commercial, and industrial purposes
  7. Public health sanitation, conservancy and solid waste management
  8. Slum up-gradation and improvement
  9. Roads and bridges construction
  10. Safeguarding the interests of the weaker sections including the physically and mentally challenged
  11. Urban forestry, protection of the environment and promotion of ecological aspects
  12. Provision of urban amenities and facilities such as parks, playgrounds, and gardens
  13. Promotion of educational, cultural, and aesthetic aspects
  14. Regulation of slaughter houses and tanneries
  15. Burials and burials grounds, cremation and cremation grounds and electric crematoriums
  16. Maintaining statistics including registration of births and deaths
  17. Cattle ponds, prevention of cruelty to animals
  18. Public amenities including parking spaces, street lighting, bus stops and public conveniences
