The Types of Directive Principles are Promoting economic and social equality, Gandhian principles, principles to maintain world peace and security, etc. The Constitution contains a number of guiding concepts. Some are associated with Gandhian philosophy, others with socioeconomic development, and others with foreign policy.

Types of Directive Principles

Although they are not divided into distinct categories in the Constitution, we can group them into the following groups for easier comprehension.

Principles promoting Social and Economic Equality

  • The government should ensure that its citizens have adequate means of subsistence.

Gandhian principles include the following

  • To create Panchayats in rural areas.
  • To support rural communities’ small enterprises.
  • To outlaw harmful substances like alcoholic beverages and pharmaceuticals that intoxicate people.
  • To prevent killing cows, calves, and other milch and draught animals and to protect and develop cattle breeds.

Guiding principles for maintaining World Peace and Security

  • Encourage global security and peace.
  • Maintain fair and honorable international relations.
  • Encourage adherence to treaty obligations and international law.
  • Encourage the mutual resolution of global problems.

Other Principles

  • To provide a unified civil code for all Indians.
  • To safeguard historical sites.
  • To preserve wildlife and the environment from pollution.
  • To put plans in place for free legal justice through appropriate legislation.
