As of 2022, India has 28 States and 8 Union Territories. Under the States Reorganization Act, 1956 the states were reorganized on a linguistic basis. The list of 28 states of India and their capitals is given here. 

India, a Union of States, is a Sovereign, Secular, Democratic Republic with a Parliamentary system of Government. Each Indian state has administrative, legal, and judicial capital. Every state has its own Chief Minister who governs the state. 

India is a mosaic of multicultural experiences with a rich heritage and myriad attractions. The country is the seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous country, and the most populous democracy in the world.
