Define Sustainable Development

193 nations gathered in September 2015 at the United Nations to establish and commit to a long-term, comprehensive strategy to address the biggest global sustainable development issues. The SDGs, a set of 17 targets for a better and more sustainable future by 2030, is the end result.

While each goal is important in and of itself, they all interact and incorporate social, economic, and environmental sustainability.

Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations describes the goals as a global blueprint for the planet’s dignity, peace, and prosperity.

According to Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University, adopting global goals is critical for the following reasons: Encourage political leaders to act through peer pressure and expert networks, as well as mobilize stakeholder networks across nations, industries, and regions to work toward a common goal.
