What are the Four Realms of the Earth? Explain Them

By BYJU'S Exam Prep

Updated on: November 9th, 2023

The Four Realms of the Earth are Lithosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere, and Atmosphere. The four realms of the earth are overlapping subsystems that hold all the mass, water, gases, and living things that make up the planet. Realms or spheres are the names of the natural regions on our planet that share certain characteristics.

Four Realms of the Earth

The Earth’s four realms comprise interconnected subsystems that encompass all the mass, water, gases, and living organisms constituting the planet. Additionally, materials and energy are moved around within each geosphere or shell.

The realms are all interconnected, with materials and energy moving back and forth between any two “spheres.” Let’s now explore these four earthly realms in more detail.

  • Atmosphere: This is the uppermost layer or realm of the earth that can extend up to 10000 km and comprises gases.
  • Hydrosphere: This layer or realm of the earth contains all the water bodies of the world. Hence, it covers the maximum part of the Earth and comprises 70% of the Earth’s area.
  • Lithosphere: The lithosphere is the outermost realm of the earth that comprises the crust, rocks, and solid layer of the earth.
  • Biosphere: This is the habitable layer of earth where land, water, and air are all present.
