Disadvantages of Organic Farming
Organic farming is the agricultural process involving organic fertilizers (e.g., bone meal, green manure, compost manure), pesticides, livestock food additives, growth regulators, and genetically modified organisms. But, it has a few disadvantages. These include-
- High cost- The practice of organic farming demands a lot of money because the output from the land is not similar to that of conventional farmers. Also, the production costs are higher than expected.
- Poor Marketing- Since the food is produced in a smaller quantity, the food distribution and its marketing are not that efficient.
- Need for sufficient knowledge- It is a particular process. Thus, organic farmers need to have sufficient skills required for the process. They must have enough knowledge of the localized soil system, ecology, meteorology, and other factors responsible for crop growth. If the farmer does not have enough knowledge and skill, they will not be able to protect the crop from danger.
- Easy susceptible to illness- Organic crops are prone to illness. Because of this, there might be a slow production rate.
- Lack of subsidies- Not only do the farmers have to face the issue of poor crops, but they also have to face the loss of subsidies that the other farmers enjoy. The illness of crops and bad weather conditions makes them lose their lands and livelihoods.
- Organic pesticides and other chemicals- Organic farmers use organic pesticides and chemicals with lower concentrations. They are harmless but can become toxic for the crops when used frequently.
