India has been invaded by different rulers in the past, and each ruler and empire brought its own name to India. Currently, India consists of 28 states and 8 union territories. However, in the past, the nations Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar were also part of India. India was not always called India, there have been different names of India.

  • Hodu- It is the Biblical Hebrew name for India, and it is also mentioned in the Old Testament.
  • Bharat- India is officially called Bharat or Republic of India
  • Aryavarta- It was the name for the Northern region of India
  • Hindustan- Persians named India Hindustan or Hind, and this name is still used
  • Tenjiku- Tianzhu is pronounced as Tenjiku, the Japanese and Chinese gave this name
  • Jambudweep- Jambdvipa or Jambudweep means “Land of the Jambu Trees”
  • Nabhivarsha- Old texts refer to India as Nabhivarsha. There are two reasons for this, first one is that Nabhi ruled India and that’s why the name came to be known as Nabhivarsha. The second reason is, that India appears to be the navel or center of earth hence the name Nabhivarsha.
