Aerobic translates as “with air.” Therefore, the process of cellular respiration known as aerobic respiration uses oxygen to create energy from food. Most plants and animals, including people, birds, and other mammals, engage in this sort of respiration regularly.
• Anaerobic respiration is the name given to the type of cellular respiration that takes place when O2 is not present. Anaerobic is short for “without air.” As a result, oxygen is not used in this kind of cellular respiration to generate energy. Some species may not always have access to enough oxygen to allow for respiration, but they still require energy to survive. They engage in anaerobic respiration, or respiration without oxygen, in order to produce the energy they need due to a lack of oxygen. Lower plants and microbes typically engage in anaerobic respiration.
