There are four Branches of Horticulture, namely Floriculture, Olericulture, Pomology, and Post-harvest Technology. Horticulture is the science and art of cultivating vegetables, fruits, flowers, and crops. Horticulture is a broad field that includes a wide range of crops.

The word horticulture is derived from two Latin terms ‘hortus’ and ‘colere’, which stand for garden and to cultivate. People are doing Horticulture practices these days, and they are growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, nuts, and much more.

Horticulture is a wide field that includes a large diversity of crops. Many factors can affect and influence the success of the crop, such as the climate, terrain, region variations, and more.

Main Branches of Horticulture

There are mainly 4 Branches of Horticulture depending upon the crops it deals with such as:

  • Floriculture: It deals with the science and practice of flowering and ornamental crops. In recent times, the trend of such type of Horticulture is increased.
  • Pomology: This popular branch of horticulture deals with producing, harvesting, processing, preserving, storing, and marketing nuts and fruits. It needs proper care to grow.
  • Olericulture: It deals with the scientific study and practice of vegetable crops.
  • Post-harvest Technology: This is one of the major branches of horticulture that deals with the practices and principles of harvesting, packaging, handling, and processing. It aims to improve availability and storage life.
