West Bengal Districts consist of 23 distinguishable regions in the state which are headed by a Deputy Commissioner each. These districts are classified under five broad administrative divisions of Presidency, Jalpaiguri, Malda, Medinipur and Burdwan. Recently, the West Bengal Cabinet approved the decision of adding more West Bengal districts.

After the addition of new districts, the count of total districts in West Bengal will be 30. Here, we have shared the names and other important details regarding the existing and proposed districts in the state of West Bengal.

How Many District in West Bengal are there?

Currently, the number of total districts in West Bengal is 23. However, since the West Bengal Cabinet approved the decision of adding new districts to the state in 2022, the number of West Bengal districts will increase to 30 soon.

After India’s independence in 1947, the state of West Bengal was initially formed with only 14 districts. Subsequently, in the following years, many more districts in West Bengal were added by the West Bengal Cabinet.

New Districts in West Bengal

On 1 August 2022, the West Bengal Cabinet approved the formation of seven new districts in West Bengal. This will raise the number of districts in the state from 23 to 30. Here is more information about the new West Bengal districts and the areas they will be carved from

  • Ichhamati District and Basirhat District will be carved out from the existing North 24 Parganas District.
  • New Sundarban District will be carved from South 24 Parganas District.
  • Bishnupur District will be carved from the existing Bankura district in West Bengal.
  • Jangipur District and Berhampore district will be carved out from Murshidabad District.
  • New Ranaghat District will be carved from Nadia District.
