We can get the smell of perfume sitting several meters away because of fast diffusion of vapors. Perfume consists of vapors, when it is released from its container, these vapors evaporate quickly. As perfume is made up of chemicals that smell pleasant, these vapors also contain the same.

As the kinetic energy of gases is high, the rate at which they diffuse is also very high. Kinetic energy refers to the energy that is in an object in motion. Diffusion refers to the process in which particle moves from higher concentration areas to lower concentration areas. It is known that the rate of diffusion is proportional to the increase in kinetic energy. Hence, the vapors in the perfume diffuse very quickly. As a result of this, the smell of it can reach people sitting several meters away.
