WBPCS: Important Book-list and Sources!! West Bengal Civil Services Examination is conducted by WPSC regularly for recruitment in various posts in the State government like WB Civil Services, Assistant Commissioner of Revenue, Labour Service, Food and Supply Service, West Bengal Police Service. To clear such an exam, a Clear understanding of the syllabus is required. As well as, the right sources to study from are needed to avoid any confusion at the later stage of Preparation. WBPSC Prelims Exam Pattern 2021

  • The WBCS Prelims exam consists of only 1 MCQ paper.
  • The Prelims paper consists of General Studies and Aptitude questions of 200 marks to be solved in 2.5 hours duration
  • The marks obtained from this exam will not be added to the final result. It is only a screening test to admit students to the mains examination

Every aspirant must understand the above pattern and should go through the syllabus on his own to get a thorough understanding of the examination. Now let us take each topic individually and see which books or source are best to study that topic from:

English Composition: 

The questions in English Composition are asked from topics like Synonyms and Antonyms, Idioms and Phrases, Vocabulary etc. To cover this section of the syllabus ample practice of previous year papers and mock tests should be done. Candidates can also refer to S P Bakshi(Arihant Publication) or General English by Neetu Singh to cover the English portion.

General Science: 

The candidates are expected to have a general understanding of high school level general science and its applications in everyday life. Candidates must go through standard books like NCERTs and State Board Text Books. Apart from this LUCENT General Science can be of great help in quick revision.

Current Events: 

This section of the syllabus covers all those recent events in the news that impact India's policies nationally and internationally. A WBCS Candidate must make a habit of reading at least one newspaper daily(The Hindu, The Indian Express etc), apart from the newspaper Monthly Current Affairs for PCS Exams is enough to cover current affairs for the WBCS Exam.

History of India and Indian National Movement: 

These two topics from history constitute the highest marks from a single subject. Candidates must give special focus on History. Candidates can refer to standard State Board textbooks and Spectrum to cover the History syllabus. Apart from these NCERT for Ancient India by R.S. Sharma must also be read.

Geography:

WBCS asks questions based on Indian as well as West Bengal state-specific Geography. Candidates must go through  Standard State Board Books to cover Geography for WBCS. Apart from this, candidates can also refer to Majid Hussain, though only the topics relevant to the syllabus should be studied. 

Indian Polity and Economy:

Laxmikanth for Indian Polity and Ramesh Singh for Economy are two books that you can never go wrong with these two subjects.

General Mental Ability:

Questions from General Mental Ability are asked from basic aptitude and logical reasoning. Candidates are advised to practice from R.S. Agarwal for reasoning and Mock tests for CSAT to score good in this subject.
