Easy Way to Learn English Vocabulary for SSC Exams 2021

Let us start by understanding some basics:

Roots in the English language are made up of four parts. These are -

GREEK ROOTS, GERMAN ROOTS, FRENCH ROOTS, LATIN ROOTS

If you learn these roots, you can figure out the meaning of hundreds of English language words without even knowing their exact meaning. Yes, you read it right!! 

The first question arises here is what is root?

A root is the part of the word which gives instructions to a word. Now, how many parts is a word made of? A word is made up of three parts. For ex- subtracted

                                Sub (prefix) --------tract (root) ---------- ed (suffix)

Note: PREFIX---a word, letter or number placed before another.

SUFFIX---a letter or a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.

CASE I 

ROOT -  CIDE means Killing or murder or cutting

With the help of this root, you can get the meaning of several other English words. Such as,

  • SUICIDE----killing oneself
  • MATRICIDE----killing one’s mother
  • PATRICIDE----killing one’s father
  • FRATRICIDE----killing one’s own brother
  • INFANTICIDE----killing a newborn
  • FOETICIDE----killing an unborn child
  • INSECTICIDES----chemicals which are used for killing insects
  • PESTICIDES----chemicals which are used for killing pests
  • HOMICIDE----killing a human being

CASE II

ROOT ----Pater or Patri   means father or fatherhood or relating to fathers or father land

Other Words -

  • PATRIARCHY----A system (a family/ society) which is run by the male head (father) of the family.
  • PATRIOT----One who loves his nation (the word actually originated from Germany where they call their nation as fatherland instead of motherland).
  • COMPATRIOT----People who belong to the same nation and live together.
  • EXPATRIATE----People who share the same origin but are living in some other nation.
  • PATERNITY----Fatherhood
  • PATERNAL----related to father

CASE III

Consider APO or APHO as a ROOT means away, off, separate, without, absent, loss, regret, lack.

Other words:

  • APHOBIA----Fearlessness, a lack of fear.
  • APHONIC---- having no voice or sound; mute.
  • APHONOUS---- Without a voice, voiceless.
  • APHORISM---- a short expression of a general truth.
  • APOLOGETIC---- expressing or showing regretful acknowledgment of an offence or failure.
  • APOLOGETICISM---- An instance use of an expression of regret.
  • APOLOGIAN---- one who regrets.
  • APOGEOTROPIC---- Bending away from the ground.
  • APOSTROPHE---- address to an absent or imaginary person

CASE IV

ROOT ----CAUST or CAUT means to burn, caution, careful

Other English words:

  • CAUTEL---- caution
  • CAUTELOUS---- careful
  • CAUTERANT---- an instrument or substance used to destroy tissue for medical reasons by burning it with a hot iron or an electric current or a caustic or by freezing it.
  • CAUSTIC---- any chemical substance that burns or destroys living tissue
  • CAUSTICITY---- The quality of being physically caustic, burning, corrosive.
  • CAUSTICIZATION---- The act of making something burn (caustic).
  • CAUSTICALLY---- burnt in a vitriolic manner
  • CAUTERIZE----to burn with a hot instrument.
  • HOLOCAUST----total devastation, especially by fire.

CASE V

Consider BEL or BELLI as a ROOT  means WAR, FIGHT, RESISTANCE, OPPOSES

Other words:

  • BELLIC----warlike
  • BELLICISM---- The policy or practice of resorting to war even when it is not necessary and is avoidable.
  • BELLICIST---- Adherent of bellicism, an advocate of war, one who is war-centered or war-oriented.
  • BELLICOSE---- having or showing a ready disposition to fight
  • BELLIGERENT----hostile ready to fight
  • BELLICOSITY---- a natural disposition to fight
  • BELLIGERATI---- Literary people, authors — literati — who promote wars of aggression.
  • BELLIGERENCY---- aggressive or warlike behaviour.
  • REBEL----person who opposes and fights
  • REBELLIOUS---- resisting control or authority
  • REBELLER---- One who rebels or opposes

CASE VI

ROOT ----AMI or AMO   means LOVE, MORAL, EASY TO TALK TO

Other words:

  • AMOR---- god of love
  • AMORET---- A love knot, love token, or love song.
  • AMORALLY---- without regard for morality
  • AMORETTE---- A petty love affair.
  • AMORIST---- one dedicated to love and lovemaking especially one who writes about love
  • AMORISTIC---- of or pertaining to romantic love
  • AMOROUS---- inclined toward or displaying love
  • AMITY----friendly and peaceful relations
  • AMIABLE----friendly, pleasant, lovable
  • AMIABLENESS---- a disposition to be friendly and approachable (easy to talk to)
  • AMOROUSNESS---- a feeling of love or fondness
