About First Governor-General of India
William Bentick was the Governor-General from 1773 to 1785. The Governor-General was the supreme head of the administration. There were three presidencies Bengal, Bombay, and Madras. Each of these presidencies was ruled by the governor.
William Bentick was the first Governor-General of India set up a new system of justice. The new system prescribed two courts in each district a criminal court (Faujdari Adalat) and a civil court (Diwani Adalat).
