Who was the First Governor General of India?

The first Governor General of India was William Bentick. However, when the East India Company came to India, the first Governor of Bengal was Robert Clive. Later, the post of Governor of Bengal was changed to Governor General of Bengal after passing Regulating Act 1773. The first Governor General of Bengal was William Bentick.

About First Governor-General of India

William Bentick was the Governor-General from 1773 to 1785. The Governor-General was the supreme head of the administration. There were three presidencies Bengal, Bombay, and Madras. Each of these presidencies was ruled by the governor. 

William Bentick was the first Governor-General of India set up a new system of justice. The new system prescribed two courts in each district a criminal court (Faujdari Adalat) and a civil court (Diwani Adalat).
