Sir Mokshagundam Vishveshwarayya, KCIE FASc (15 September 1860 or 1861 – 14 April 1962) was a Statesman, Indian civil engineer, and 19th Diwan of Mysore, who served from 1912 – 1918. He is often referred to by the initials MV.
- He started his formal education in Bangalore and graduated from the University of Madras with a BSc.
- The third-oldest engineering college in Asia, the College of Engineering, Pune, an affiliated institution, is where he later earned his DCE (Diploma in Civil Engineering) from Bombay University.
- He received India’s highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955.
- In honour of his contributions to society, King George V named him a Knight Commander of the British Indian Empire (KCIE).
- His birthday is commemorated as Engineers’ Day on September 15 in India, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka in his honor.
- He was hired as an assistant engineer by the Government of Bombay in Nasik after completing his education.
- As an engineer, he carried out numerous projects with success.
- From 1912 to 1918, Visvesvaraya was also regarded as the Diwan of Mysore.
- In addition, he was the driving force behind the construction of the Krishnaraja Sagar dam in Mysore and the principal architect of the Hyderabad flood protection system.
