Success Story (UGC NET): Priyanka Singhal (Subject: Commerce)

Hello sir, first of all, thank you so much for this golden opportunity to share my success story with a mentor like you.

1. Preparation Strategy

While preparing for an exam, the agenda should be cracking the exam, not just preparing for the sake of it. Being positive all the time and following the ‘secret’, has been my motto. It’s not important what will be the result, the important part is, being positive, that yes you’ve studied well, and you would do it, by hook or by crook.

2. Practice

We sometimes can rely on the ‘Online mock tests’ as they help to increase our stamina to sit without any distraction on the computers. Yes, it does get a bit tiring, but when you get used to it, the complete exercise won't be too exhausting. We can enhance our skills with more practice since solving the tests helps us understand where we stand. We come to know about our strengths, and most importantly our weaknesses. We should learn from our mistakes. Never be let down of your weaknesses. Learn from them and work on them.

3. Section-wise tips to keep in mind

There is always an updation made in the exam from time to time, on the basis of the professional exam. The schedule for preparation should be made beforehand because scheduling helps in covering all the topics on time.
Like, if we talk about the December exam unit, it comprises of mainly 12 units. One should go through every point considering the fact that you are preparing to crack the exam. It’s important to solve the questions of previous year exams as well. Sometimes, the questions might be repeated, but one must have a very good understanding of the pattern of questions that are asked in the exam. This also helps to boost the confidence level of the aspirant.

4. Books Preferred

  • I preferred many books during my preparation of UGC NET, for eg. I followed 12th standard economics book for business economics and for financial management.
  • I also used M. Y. Khan and R P Rastogi.
  • For income tax, I used H. C. Malhotra and my undergraduate and postgraduate books.
  • My suggestion for every student is to focus on basic concepts first. Concept clarity is more important than anything.

5. Marks/ Attempts (Scorecard)

I scored 64 marks in Paper-I of UGC NET and 118 marks in Paper-II.
I practiced around 400 questions from BYJU'S Exam Prep app. The good thing is that the questions had prescribed correct answers and solutions to help the students and the readers. We need to be honest with ourselves before pointing out the answers, to understand our preparation level correctly. We need to prepare it by giving our whole heart and sweat.

Education is the manifestation of knowledge already in man.

Manifesting the knowledge can be through teachers or any guru. Here, for scoring a high percentile, you are your own guru in the end. Self-studying helps you a lot. Practice makes the man perfect and that’s true, I have experienced it until now. Concluding, I would say, Yes, it’s not easy, but it’s not difficult too.
Best wishes to Priyanka for her future endeavors,
