Given, that two metallic oxides contain 27.6% and 30% oxygen.
The formula of the first oxide is X₃O₄
We have to find the formula of the second oxide.
According to the question,
Oxygen content in the first oxide = 27.6%
The metallic content X in first oxide = 100 – 27.6 = 72.4%
Oxygen content in the second oxide = 30%
The metallic content X in second oxide = 100 – 30 = 70%
Using the chemical formula to find the number of moles,
72.4% of X = 3 moles of X
Now, 70% of X = 3/72.4 x 70
= 210/72.4
= 2.90 mol of X
≅ 2 mol of X
Similarly, 27.6% of O = 4 moles of O
Now, 30% of O = 4/27.6 x 30
= 120/27.6
= 4.34 mol of O
≅ 3
Now, X : O = 2 : 3
Therefore, the formula for the second oxide will be X₂O₃
Summary:
Two metallic oxides contain 27.6% and 30% oxygen respectively. If the formula of the first oxide is X3O4, the formula of the second will be: (a). XO (b). XO2 (c). X2O5 (d). X2O3
Two metallic oxides contain 27.6% and 30% oxygen respectively. If the formula of the first oxide is X₃O₄, the formula of the second will be X₂O₃.
