Turns ratio of the transformer is directly proportional to _______.

  1. Impedance ratio
  2. Voltage ratio
  3. Current ratio
  4. None of the above

Answer: B. Voltage ratio

Turns ratio of the transformer is directly proportional to the voltage ratio.

Solution

Transformer is a constant flux machine because flux in the magnetic core of transformer is constant.  as the flux flowing through both the primary and secondary winding of transformer is the constant voltage induced per turn is also a constant for both primary and secondary windings of transformer.

As we know the transformer is an electrostatic device, which is used to transfer the electric power from one voltage level to another, for example in a step-up transformer primary winding is low voltage winding and the secondary is high voltage winding.

As the voltage per turn on both windings is the same, so, high voltage winding should have a large number of turns compared to low voltage winding. As we can see a number of turns on either winding depends on the voltage to be induced on that winding, so we can say that number of turns on either winding is directly proportional to the voltage to be induced in that circuit. Then the turns ratio is defined as the ratio of primary winding turns to the secondary winding turns, is directly proportional to the voltage ratio which defined as the ratio of primary voltage to secondary voltage. So turns ratio can be defined as

VP/VS=NP/NS=k

Where,

VP,VS are voltages on primary and secondary winding respectively,

NP,NS are number of turns on primary and secondary winding respectively.

So, the Turns ratio of the transformer is directly proportional to the voltage ratio.
