Tokyo Olympics 2020: News and Updates

The 2020 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXXII Olympiad and branded as Tokyo 2020, is an ongoing international multi-sport event that is currently being held from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan, with some preliminary events beginning on 21 July.

7th August 2021

1) Neeraj Chopra scripts Olympic history for India with first-ever gold in track-and-field at Tokyo 2020

  • Neeraj Chopra, with a best effort of 87.58 metres, led from start to finish as favourite Johannes Vetter crashed out early in the javelin throw at the Tokyo Olympics.
  • The gold medal is also India’s first Olympic medal in track-and-field events. It took India’s medal count at Tokyo 2020 to seven - their best-ever haul at a single Olympics.
  • India had won six medals at London 2012 but there were no gold medals.Neeraj Chopra threw a best attempt of 87.58m to win the Olympic gold.
  • Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch won silver and fellow Czech Vitezslav Vesely won bronze to complete the podium.

2) Bajrang Punia wins wrestling bronze at Tokyo Olympics

  • The Indian wrestler scored a comfortable 8-0 victory over Kazakhstan’s Daulet Niyazbekov to win his bronze medal at Tokyo 2020.
  • Bajrang Punia’s win took India’s medals tally at Tokyo 2020 to six.
  • Mirabai Chanu’s silver in weightlifting, Lovlina Borgohain’s bronze in boxing, PV Sindhu’s bronze in badminton, Indian men’s hockey team’s bronze and Ravi Kumar Dahiya’s silver in wrestling are the other five.

3) Golfer Aditi Ashok slips on final day, finishes fourth at Tokyo 2020

  • Aditi Ashok was second overnight, three strokes adrift the leader.
  • The Indian golfer finished two shots behind Nelly Korda, who won the Olympic gold medal.Aditi Ashok carded 3-under 68 in the final round and had a combined score of 15-under, just one shot off playing for the medal places. It is the best finish of any Indian golfer at the Olympics.

4) Asian record for India’s 4x400m men’s relay team at Tokyo Olympics

  • The Indian quartet clocked 3:00.25 to finish fourth in their heat but didn’t make the cut for the final race at Tokyo 2020.
  • Eight teams make the final, India finished ninth overall.
  • Competing in the second heat that had heavyweights Jamaica and Poland, the Indian quartet of Muhammed Anas, Noah Nirmal Tom, Arokia Rajiv and Amoj Jacob clocked 3:00.25 to finish fourth at the Olympic Stadium.

1) Silver solace for Ravi Kumar Dahiya at Tokyo Olympics wrestling

  • Ravi Kumar Dahiya is the second Indian wrestler to win a silver medal at the Olympics after Sushil Kumar. He lost the 57kg freestyle final to world champion Zaur Uguev.
  • Ravi Kumar Dahiya fell short of winning an Olympic gold medal following a 7-4 loss to Zaur Uguev of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) at the Tokyo 2020 57kg freestyle wrestling final on Thursday.

2) Golf Tokyo 2020: Aditi Ashok ties second, stays in medal contention

  • Indian golfer Aditi Ashok tied at second position after round 2 of women's individual stroke play after carding nine-under 133.
  • India women lose cliffhanger vs Great Britain in Tokyo Olympics hockey bronze medal clash

  • Gurjit Kaur’s twin strike equalised for India from 2-0 down. The teams were locked 3-3 going into the final quarter but Britain scored the all-important goal in the fourth.
  • Great Britain scored through Ellie Rayer (16th minute), Sarah Robertson (24th), Hollie Pearne-Webb (35th) and Grace Balsdon (48th).
  • India hit back via Gurjit Kaur (25th and 26th) and Vandana Katariya (29th) but were unable to find the late equaliser.

4) India's Gurpreet Singh fails to finish gruelling 50km race walk at Tokyo Olympics

  • The Indian race walker was forced to withdraw after suffering from cramps around the 35km mark amid hot and humid conditions.
  • Amid draining conditions at the Sapporo Odori Park in Hokkaido, where the temperature slowly soared to around 30 degrees centigrade with the humidity around 80, the the 37-year-old Indian army man gradually lost ground.

5) Tokyo Olympics wrestling: India’s Seema Bisla goes down in opening round

  • The Indian wrestler lost 3-1 to Tunisia’s Sarra Hamdi in the round of 16 of the 50kg women’s wrestling category.
  • Hamdi later lost her quarter-final bout to the world champion Mariya Stadnik of Azerbaijan and ended Seema Bisla’s hopes of re-entry into the competition via repechage.

1) India end medal drought after 41 years with Tokyo Olympics hockey bronze

  • The Indian hockey men’s team beat Germany 5-4 in a high-scoring thriller in the bronze medal match. India last won an Olympic hockey medal at Moscow 1980.
  • The Indian men’s hockey team has now won 12 hockey medals at the Olympics - eight golds, one silver and three bronze.
  • It was India’s second medal in Tokyo after their gold at the 1964 Games.On Thursday, Simranjeet Singh (17th and 34th minutes) and Harmanpreet Singh (27th and 29th) scored braces each while Rupinder Pal Singh (31st) slotted in a penalty stroke for India.

2) India’s Ravi Kumar Dahiya earns Tokyo Olympics gold medal match with last-gasp pin

  • Ravi Kumar Dahiya won his semi-final bout by fall. The Indian wrestler will now gun for the gold medal at Tokyo 2020.India’s Ravi Kumar Dahiya stormed into the Tokyo 2020 Olympics men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling event’s gold medal match after a victory by fall over Kazakhstan’s Nurislam Sanayev in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
  • Ravi Kumar Dahiya is the second Indian wrestler in history to enter the gold medal match at the Olympics. Sushil Kumar made it to the final at London 2012 but won silver.

3) Fighting Indian women lose to Argentina in semis, to play for Tokyo 2020 hockey bronze

  • India squandered an early lead as world No. 2 Argentina came back strongly in the semi-final.
  • India will face Great Britain in the bronze medal match next. Rani Rampal’s India, ranked No. 7, will now face Great Britain in the bronze medal match, while Argentina will take on the Netherlands for the gold on Friday.

4) Golfer Aditi Ashok impresses on opening day at Tokyo Olympics

  • Aditi carded a four-under 67 in the first round of the women’s golf event at Tokyo 2020 and shared the second position with PGA winner Nelly Korda.
  • Sweden’s Madelene Sagström, meanwhile, led the field by one shot with a score of five-under 66.

5) India’s Vinesh Phogat loses in Tokyo Olympics wrestling quarter-finals

  • The Indian wrestler lost her quarter-final bout against two-time world champion Vanesa Kaladzinskaya by fall.
  • Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic hopes now rest on repechage.
  • Up against Vanesa Kaladzinskaya, a two-time European and world champion, Vinesh Phogat made a cautious start at the Makuhari Messe Hall in Chiba.

1) Tokyo Olympics: Lovlina Borgohain settles for bronze after losing semi-final

  • India's Lovlina Borgohain on Wednesday went down in the semi-final of the women's welterweight (64-69kg) category to Turkey's Busenaz Surmeneli to settle for a bronze medal.
  • This is India's third medal of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.Borgohain might have gone down but she has become only the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the Olympics.
  • Six-time world champion Mary Kom clinched bronze at the 2012 London Olympics, while Vijender Singh bagged bronze in Beijing in 2008.

2) India’s Neeraj Chopra eases into Tokyo Olympics javelin final, Shivpal bows out

  • Neeraj Chopra topped qualifying with a throw of 86.65m ahead of favourite Johannes Vetter of Germany. Shivpal Singh finished 27th out of 31.
  • Only 12 make the final.At the Olympic Stadium, the 23-year-old Neeraj Chopra cleared the qualifying mark of 83.50 metres in his first attempt to book a place in Saturday’s final.
  • He topped the overall standings with a throw of 86.65 metres.

3) India’s Ravi Kumar Dahiya enters Tokyo Olympics wrestling 57kg semis, assures medal bout

  • Ravi Kumar Dahiya won his quarter-final bout by technical superiority. The Indian wrestler faces Kazakhstan’s Nurislam Sanayev in the Tokyo 2020 semi-finals.

4) Deepak Punia to fight for medal next at Tokyo Olympics, advances into 86kg semis

  • Staring at an early elimination at the Makuhari Messe, the 22-year-old Deepak Punia managed a two-point takedown in the final 10 seconds of his quarter-final bout to keep his Tokyo 2020 campaign alive.

5) India’s Anshu Malik loses opening bout in women’s 57kg wrestling at Tokyo Olympics

  • The 27-year-old Belarussian will now take on Rio 2016 silver medallist, Valeria Koblova of the ROC, in the quarter-finals later in the day.

1) India men’s Olympic gold dream crushed, lose to Belgium in Tokyo 2020 hockey semis

  • The Indian hockey team lost 5-2 to the reigning world champions. India will now play the bronze medal match next on Thursday. Belgium progress to the gold medal match.
  • With it, the Indian men’s hockey team’s hopes of winning a gold medal for the first time in 41 years was crushed. India last won a gold, also their last Olympic hockey medal, at the Moscow 1980 Games.

2) India's Annu Rani falls short of women's javelin final cut at Tokyo Olympics

  • Annu Rani's best throw of 54.04m was enough for only a 14th place finish in her group. She needed to finish within the top 12 across two groups to advance.
  • Annu Rani, the second Indian female javelin thrower after Gurmeet Kaur (Sydney 2000) to compete at the Olympics, started off her day with a 50.35m in her first throw.

3) Athletics Tokyo 2020: Kamalpreet Kaur finishes sixth in discus throw final

  • India's Kamalpreet Kaur made a discus throw final appearance at Tokyo 2020 and finished sixth in overall ranking with a 63.70m throw.

4) India’s Sonam Malik handed opening-round loss in women’s wrestling at Tokyo Olympics

  • One her Olympic debut, the Indian wrestler lost to Asian championship silver medallist Khürelkhüügiin Bolortuyaa of Mongolia in the women’s 62kg.
  • At the Makuhari Messe, Sonam Malik lost on criteria after the two wrestlers were tied 2-2 on points at the end of the bout. The Mongolian was awarded the win based on the ‘highest scoring point’ rule.

1) PV Sindhu ends with Tokyo 2020 bronze in emphatic finish

  • The Indian badminton star dismissed He Bing jiao 21-13, 21-15 to add to Rio 2016 silver.
  • PV Sindhu has become the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals.Over 53 minutes at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza court 1, PV Sindhu overcame the fighting abilities of the Chinese left-hander to join Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain as India’s medallists at the Tokyo Olympics.

2) Indian women's hockey team upsets Australia, create Olympics history

  • India, the fourth-placed team in Pool A, overcame the Pool B toppers Australia through Gurjit Kaur’s drag-flick in the 22nd minute and held on to their lead for the remainder of the match.

3) India men one win away from Tokyo Olympics hockey medal, beat Great Britain

4) Dutee Chand fails to advance in 200m, finishes last in her heat at Tokyo Olympics

  • The Indian sprinter clocked 23.85 seconds to finish seventh. Dutee Chand was 38th out of 41 in the overall standings. Her personal best in the 200m is 23.00s.
  • Competing in the heats, the Indian sprinter clocked 23.85 seconds to finish seventh and last in what was her first run over the distance for the season. Dutee Chand’s personal best in the 200m is 23.00s, set at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.

5) Injured Satish Kumar goes down to world champion in Tokyo Olympics boxing quarters

  • Satish Kumar fought despite stitches on his forehead and chin, an injury he received in the last match. All five Indian men boxers have made their exit from Tokyo 2020.
  • The 32-year-old Satish Kumar put up a spirited performance in the fight but lost to the technically superior Uzbekistan boxer by unanimous decision at the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena.

1) India’s Kamalpreet Kaur makes discus throw final at Tokyo Olympics

  • Kamalpreet Kaur was one of the two athletes to breach the direct qualifying mark of 64 metres. Four-time Olympian Seema Punia finished 16th and failed to make the cut.
  • At the Olympic stadium, Kamalpreet Kaur and Valarie Allman of the USA were the only two athletes among 31 to cross the 64-metre barrier in the qualifying round.

2) India women end group stage with win over South Africa

  • Vandana Katariya became the first Indian women's hockey player to score a hat-trick at the Olympics. India’s quarter-final hopes now rests on Ireland losing to Great Britain. 
  • The Indian women’s hockey team beat South Africa 4-3 in a must-win Tokyo Olympics Pool A group match at the Oi Hockey Stadium on Saturday.

3) Anjum Moudgil, Tejaswini Sawant unable to make 50m Rifle 3P final

  • Anjum Moudgil finished 15th and Tejaswini Sawant ended 33rd in the qualifying rounds, respectively. Only the top-eight go through to the final.
  • Anjum Moudgil, the 2018 Commonwealth Games silver-medallist, finished 15th in the qualifying rounds with a total score of 1167.
  • Tejaswini Sawant was placed 33rd out of 37 shooters with an aggregate of 1154.

4) World No. 1 Amit Panghal crashes out of Tokyo Olympics boxing at first hurdle

  • Top-seeded Amit Panghal was ousted by Rio 2016 silver medallist Yuberjen Martinez of Colombia by 4:1 split decision in the men’s 52kg (flyweight) round of 16.

5) India’s Tokyo Olympics archery campaign ends with Atanu Das’ exit

  • The Indian archer lost 6-4 to Japan’s Takaharu Furukawa, the London 2012 silver medallist in the round of 16.Up against Furukawa, the London 2012 silver medallist, at the Yumenoshima Park Archery Field, Atanu Das made a shaky start.
  • The Indian scored 25 with his three arrows in the first round (9, 8, 8) while the Japanese shot 27 (9, 9, 9).

  • Mary Kom and Vijender Singh are the only Indian boxers who have won an Olympic medal before.

  • She became the second Indian women’s boxer after MC Mary Kom (bronze at London 2012) to win an Olympic medal. 

3)  Tokyo Olympics archery: Deepika Kumari through to women’s individual quarter-finals

  • Deepika Kumari beat ROC’s Ksenia Perova 6-5 to move into the last eight. She is up against top seed An San next.
  • Deepika Kumari beat ROC’s Ksenia Perova, a two-time Olympic silver medallist, 6-5 in a shootoff in the Round of 16 in what was the first match of the day at the Yumenoshima Park Archery Field.

4)  India’s Simranjit Kaur bows out of Tokyo Olympics boxing

  • Simranjit Kaur lost to Thailand’s Sudaporn Seesondee by unanimous decision in the women’s 60kg (lightweight) category round of 16.
  • The 26-year-old Simranjit Kaur, making her Olympic debut, lost the lightweight contest by unanimous decision at the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena.

5) Tokyo Olympics archery: Atanu Das stuns Olympic champion Oh Jin-Hyek to progress to round of 16

  • Atanu Das shot a 10 in the shoot-off to beat the Olympic champion. He had earlier beaten Yu-Cheng Deng, an Olympic silver medallist, in the round of 64.

  • He had earlier beaten Yu-Cheng Deng, an Olympic silver medallist, in the round of 64.Oh Jin-Hyek had won the men’s individual gold at London 2012 - the first South Korean to do so - and the men’s team gold at Tokyo 2020, beating the Indian men’s team along the way. 2) PV Sindhu beats Mia Blichfeldt to move into Tokyo Olympics badminton quarter-finals

  • World No. 7 PV Sindhu moved into the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympics women’s singles badminton with a 21-15, 21-13 win over world No. 12 Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark in the round of 16. Ahead of the match on Thursday, PV Sindhu had said that she would have to be aggressive against an opponent who had an aggressive style too. She was true to her word; the match was played at a fast tempo from the start, and stood out for the Indian’s brisk solidity and the Dane’s high-risk, error-strewn display.

3) India seal men's hockey quarter-finals spot at Tokyo Olympics after 3-1 win over Argentina

  • Harmanpreet Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad and Varun Kumar scored goals for India against the defending Olympic champions.
  • Varun Kumar (43rd minute), Vivek Sagar Prasad (58th minute) and Harmanpreet Singh (59th minute) scored the goals for India. Maico Casella hit the board for Argentina in the 48th minute.

4)  India’s Manu Bhaker fifth in 25m pistol qualification, Rahi Sarnobat struggles

  • The two competed in the precision round. A rapid qualification stage will be held on Friday. The top eight shooters based on combined scores will qualify for the final. At the Akasa Shooting Range, the 19-year-old Manu Bhaker was in her groove as she scored 292 out of the possible 300 points.
  • Meanwhile, the other Indian in the fray, Rahi Sarnobat had a forgetful outing and was languishing at the 25th spot out of 44 shooters after the first round of qualification. Rahi scored 287 points.

5) India’s Satish Kumar advances to boxing quarter-finals at Tokyo Olympics

  • India’s first super-heavyweight Olympic boxer Satish Kumar registered a comprehensive win against Ricardo Brown from Jamaica in the +91kg round of 16 bout and advanced to the quarter-finals at the Tokyo Olympics
  • .Making his Olympic debut at the age of 32, Satish Kumar won the Online Classroom Program heavyweight bout by a 4:1 split verdict at the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena.

6)  Golfer Diksha Dagar to make Olympics debut after late entry to Tokyo 2020

  • Indian golfer Diksha Dagar will make her debut at the Summer Games after she was granted a lucky and late entry to the Tokyo Olympics women’s golf competition, which starts on August 5.
  • Diksha Dagar will join compatriot Aditi Ashok in the women’s golf field. In the men’s golf competition, Anirban Lahiri and Udayan Mane are the other Indian golfers at Tokyo.

7) Rowers Arjun Lal Jat, Arvind Singh finish 11th in Tokyo, India’s best show at Olympics

  • India’s Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh wrapped up their Tokyo Olympics campaign with an 11th place finish in the men’s lightweight double sculls event on Thursday.
  • Competing in the Final ‘B’, the ranking race to decide the seventh to 12th positions in the final standings, the Indian scullers clocked 6:29.66 to finish fifth out of six.
  • Spain’s Caetano Horta Pombo and Manel Balastegui won the race in 6:15.45 while Poland’s Jerzy Kowalski and Artur Mikolajczewski clocked 6:16.01 for a second-place finish in what was a close race.

1) PV Sindhu beats Cheung to cruise to Tokyo Olympics badminton knockouts

  • The No. 6 seed Indian beat the world No. 34 from Hong Kong 21-9, 21-16 in her final Group J match.
  • The top player from each group moves to the round of 16.PV Sindhu’s better reach, movement and use of court depth and angles was too much to handle for the 28-year old Cheung, against whom the Indian came into the match with a 5-0 record.

2) India’s Tarundeep Rai loses in second round at Tokyo Olympics men’s individual archery

  • Archer Tarundeep Rai lost 6-5 to Itay Shanny of Israel in the round of 32. The Indian had defeated Ukraine’s Oleksii Hunbin in the previous match.
  • The 37-year-old Indian put up an inspired effort but lost to Israel’s Itay Shanny in a shoot-off at the Yumenoshima Park Archery Field.

3) Tokyo Olympics rowing: India’s Arjun Lal Jat, Arvind Singh fall short of making medal round

  • The Indian rowers finished sixth and last in the semi-finals of the men's lightweight double sculls event.
  • Only the top three from each semis make the finals. At the Sea Forest Waterway, the Indian scullers clocked 6:24.41 to end at the bottom of the six-boat race. 

4) Indian women’s hockey team lose third straight match as Great Britain win group game 4-1

  • The Indian women’s hockey team failed to convert its chances to lose 4-1 to defending Olympic champions Great Britain in its Pool A match at the Oi Hockey Stadium on Wednesday.
  • This is the Indian team’s third consecutive defeat in as many outings at Tokyo 2020.
  • Hannah Martin (2), Lily Owsley and Grace Balsdon contributed for Great Britain while Sharmila Devi’s goal was the only silver lining for India.

1) Rupinder Pal Singh, Simranjeet score as India beat Spain 3-0 in Tokyo Olympics group match

  • The Indian men’s hockey team tasted success for the second time at the Tokyo Olympics as Manpreet Singh and his men beat Spain 3-0 in their third Pool A match at the Oi Hockey Stadium on Tuesday.
  • Simranjeet Singh (14th minute), Rupinder Pal Singh (15th minute, 51st minute) scored for the Indian hockey team as the Spanish forwards failed to convert.
  • Coming on the back of a crushing 7-1 loss to Australia, India started dominating early on, keeping the ball in the Spanish side. 

2) Saurabh Chaudhary, Manu Bhaker fail to qualify for 10m air pistol mixed team medal matches

  • Indian shooters Abhishek Verma and Yashaswini Singh Deswal, meanwhile, bowed out with a 17th place finish in qualifying stage 1.
  • India’s hopes for a Tokyo Olympics medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team competition ended with Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary’s exit in the qualifying stage 2 on Tuesday.
  • In qualifying stage 2, Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary suffered due to a poor start and finished seventh in the eight-team field with a total score of 380 (Saurabh 194/200 and Manu 186/200). They needed to be in the top four to qualify for any of the two medal matches.

3) India women’s hockey team suffer second straight loss, go down to Germany

  • German Captain Nike Lorenz and Anne Katarina Schroder scored for Germany. India’s Gurjit Kaur missed a penalty stroke. India are yet to score a point in the group.
  • The Indian women’s hockey team went down fighting 2-0 against a higher-ranked Germany in its Pool A second match at the Oi Hockey Stadium on Monday.
  • India are yet to score a point at the Tokyo Olympics and are currently languishing at the bottom of the group.

4) Tokyo Olympics swimming: Below his best, Sajan Prakash fails to advance in 200m butterfly

5) Sutirtha Mukherjee knocked out of Tokyo Olympics table tennis

4)Australia humiliates India 7-1, one of the worst defeat for the Indian Hockey team in Olympics

India men’s hockey team was not able to carry their winning momentum as the Manpreet Singh-led side stumbled to a defeat at the hands of Australia in their second Group A game in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.
Australia defeated India 7-1 here at the Oi Hockey Stadium North Pitch. India will next take on Spain on Tuesday. In the first quarter, Australia managed to take the lead as Daniel Beale scored. The Manpreet Singh-led India was not able to get the equaliser in the first quarter and hence the scoreline remained 1-0.

  • India's Saurabh Chaudhary qualified for the 10m men’s air pistol final at the Tokyo Olympics after shooting a total score of 586 on Saturday.
  • Chaudhary came first while his compatriot Abhishek Verma missed the cut. Verma finished 17th with a total of 575.

1) Archery: Deepika Kumari finishes 9th in ranking round, Pravin Jadhav in 31st place

  • World No.1 Deepika Kumari finished ninth with 663 points in the individual women’s category while Indian men archers gave a below-par performance in the ranking round of the archery competitions on the opening day of the Tokyo Olympics on Friday.
  • Pravin Jadhav, Atanu Das and Tarundeep Rai scored 656 (329+327), 653 (329+324), and 652 (323+329) points out of a maximum 720 to take 31st, 35th and 37th slots respectively on the men’s ranking list.
  • Three Koreans, Je Deok Kim (688), Jinheyk Oh (681) and Woojin Kim (680), at first, third and fourth places respectively, grabbed three of the top four places after showing their shooting skills over the 70m distance.
