By Dhruv Kumar|Updated : February 5th, 2022

You may be aware of how the marks and questions in the General Ability paper are divided. General Ability is divided into two sections, A and B, with A being under the English component. The English portion consists of 50 questions out of a total of 150, with a maximum score of 200, making it extremely important for any candidate to secure a spot on the merit list. To get good grades in English, you don't have to be a genius in the language, but if you work hard enough, you can compensate for everything.

Many candidates failed to score well in English simply because they were overconfident and did not prepare for it. Let's take a look at the UPSC NDA's official notification to see what exactly is expected of a candidate for the English part.

The English question paper is intended to assess the candidate's command of the English language as well as his or her ability to utilize words in a professional manner. The syllabus includes grammar and usage, vocabulary, comprehension, and cohesiveness in an extended text to assess the candidate's English proficiency.

We'll focus on strategies for getting good grades in the English part, as well as how to increase the correctness of your answers:

1. Analyze Previous Year's Question Papers:

  • Nothing beats analyzing prior year's question papers for gaining a thorough understanding of the pattern and themes. It will outline the areas in which you must concentrate your efforts and those in which you must put in the extra effort.
  • The general patterns of the exam questions do not alter as much over time as the other portions of the paper. The numbers for questions from other areas, such as antonyms, synonyms, recognizing errors, and so on, change, although their representation is usually fixed as far as the exam's trend is concerned.

2. Sections Should Be Categorized and Strategies Should Be Formulated:

  • The question paper has several elements, including antonyms, synonyms, identifying errors, idioms, and phrases, fill in the blanks, sentence sequencing, and comprehensions.
  • You won't have to do any work because they're all organized on the question paper, but you will have to figure out which areas you can manage well. If a candidate excels at synonyms and antonyms but has trouble spotting errors, he should concentrate on the former while simultaneously determining the fundamental cause of his poor performance in the latter.
  • Spotting errors is part of the grammar section of English, while synonyms and antonyms are part of the language section. Find your talents and limitations, and improve your performance by assessing both and lowering your anxiety.

3. Attempt a Large Number of Mock Tests:

  • Examining prior year's question papers will not get you any points. It is highly recommended that you solve as many practice question papers as possible to improve your accuracy.
  • Preparing for the exam by taking practice tests lessens the stress you put on yourself and improves your ability to answer questions. Mock exams are created in such a way that they simulate a real-life test situation, allowing you to attempt the questions and make as many mistakes as you need to learn.

4. Develop a Basic Understanding of English Grammar:

  • It is critical that you are familiar with the fundamentals of English grammar rules, as the questions that make up the majority of the English portion are primarily concerned with grammar.
  • There are many books to practice with, and you should commit enough time to specific areas to gain familiarity while also improving your basic understanding. Begin from the beginning and work your way through each step.

5. To understand the structure of English, you should read a lot:

  • When compared to the other sections, comprehension in English is the easiest because you only have to locate the answers from the given passage, but it takes time. This is the section where you can get good points whether you have been an avid or just a regular reader in your life.
  • Start reading frequently to familiarize yourself with the comprehensions and passage structure. This will not only solve your language comprehension challenges, but it will also enhance your vocabulary, which may be utilized to answer questions about antonyms and synonyms, as well as one-word substitution questions.

6. Working On Your Vocabulary on a Regular Basis:

  • Every day, you should learn a new set of words and apply them to construct meaningful phrases. It will not only assist you in comprehending the right context of the terms, but it will also familiarize you with their synonyms, antonyms, and other users.
  • Reading a book and noting the words that you don't know can help you expand your vocabulary.

7. Cautions Should Be Taken When Attempting:

  • People frequently advise taking chances while marking responses because it enhances the possibilities of correctly answering a lot of questions, but this is only true for those who can properly utilize the elimination of options.
  • If you are more than 60% sure about an option, go for it; if the possibilities are slim, don't do it because it will affect your overall score.
