The Third Battle of Panipat was fought in 1761. Nearly 97 km from Delhi, in Panipat (in Haryana), an encounter occurred between Maratha soldiers and invading Afghan forces. The Afghans were ruled by Ahmed Shah Durrani, who received assistance from Shuja-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh, and the Rohilla Afghans of the Doab. On the other side, neither the Sikhs, the Jats, nor the Rajputs supported the Marathas.

Ahmad Shah Abdali, the king of Afghanistan and the Marathas, engaged in combat at the third battle of Panipat. On the battlefield, the Afghan heavy artillery outperformed the Maratha small artillery by a wide margin. Further, Maratha’s gains in the north were halted due to the conflict, which also caused their domains to become unstable.

It was regarded as one of the fiercest conflicts in Indian history. Approximately 70,000 troops lost their lives in that conflict. The Maratha Empire on the northern border of India saw its strength decrease due to the fight.
