The Southernmost Point of India is located in the islands of Andaman and Nicobar. It is known as Indira Point, and its precise location is in a village in the Great Nicobar Tehsil. The place was named in honor of the first female Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. The tsunami of 2004 killed a large number of the village’s inhabitants. There are now only 4 households in Indira Point, according to the 2011 Indian census.

The southernmost point of India was earlier called Parsons Point and Pygmalion Point. Only after Indira Gandhi visited the local lighthouse in 1984 was the name changed to Indira Point. Furthermore, the official renaming ceremony of the place occurred on 30 April 1972.
