The purpose of transmission in an automobile is______.

  1. To vary the speed of the automobile
  2. To vary the torque at the wheels
  3. To vary the power of the automobile
  4. None of these

Answer: 2. To vary the torque at the wheels

The purpose of transmission in an automobile is to vary the torque at the wheels.

Solution:

A vehicle’s transmission enables it to be driven more efficiently at various speeds. For the engine to be able to achieve this, it provides a Mechanical advantage. Look up the output specifications for different engines and you’ll start to notice a pattern in the output profiles; internal combustion engines have a power band that is quite constrained. This power is not quite sufficient on its own to accelerate a bike, automobile, or multi-axle truck, much less move on a highway or uphill roads. It is connected by a transmission, which increases the power’s effectiveness. This is connected further to a drive system that reduces the load even more (and has a greater mechanical advantage) before rotating the drive wheels. Hence the purpose of transmission in an automobile is to vary the torque at the wheels.
