The loudness of sound depends upon the amplitude of the sound waves. The property that separates a sharp sound from a flat sound is the pitch of the sound. The frequency of the sound waves determines the pitch we hear, while keeping the amplitude constant. A sound with a high pitch is referred to as shrill and has a high frequency. Grave sounds are described as having a low pitch and a low frequency.
Loudness of Sound
Loudness– Sound characteristic that gives the impression that the sound is strong or slow. Although it is not directly proportional, the loudness that we perceive is connected to the sound’s intensity. The loudness is determined by amplitude or intensity as well as ear sensitivity. The formula for the relationship between volume and intensity is – Intensity ∝ A2
Where A is the amplitude.
Amplitude of sound- The size of the greatest disturbance in a sound wave is its amplitude. The amplitude can also be used to quantify energy. The energy of a sound wave increases with increasing amplitude. Only a small spectrum of sound frequencies can be heard by humans.
The auditory frequency spectrum of the human ear has been determined by physicists to be in the range of 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz. The human ear can pick up frequencies as low as 12 Hz and as high as 20,000 Hz under perfect laboratory circumstances.
