In physics, sound is a vibration that travels via a transmission medium such as a liquid, solid, or gas as an acoustic wave. The energy which is carried by a wave is proportional to its amplitude. A wave with a high amplitude carries a large amount of energy, whereas one with a low amplitude just carries a little amount of energy. The average amount of energy moving across a unit area in a given amount of time in a particular direction is referred to as a wave's intensity.
