The Efficiency of a Screw Jack is Maximum When

By Mohit Uniyal|Updated : July 19th, 2022

The efficiency of a screw jack is maximum when, α = Helix angle and Φ = Angle of friction

A. α = 45º + Φ/2
B. α = 45º - Φ/2
C. α = 90º + Φ
D. α = 90º - Φ

Find the correct answer from the given option and also provide a detailed solution.

Answer: (B) - α = 45º - Φ/2

The efficiency of a screw jack is maximum when, α = 45º - Φ/2

Solution:

To get higher efficiency square threads can be provided in the screw jack. Due to the used of square thread instead of V-thread or Thrapezoidal shapes threads, it makes screw jack self locking

The efficiency of screw jack is given by

η = (1 - SinΦ)/(1+ SinΦ)

For the maximum effeciency of screw jack

α = 45º - Φ/2
