The blue color is used for showing water bodies. Any accumulation of water on the surface of the earth is termed a water body such as sea, rivers, oceans, etc. Other than this, smaller accumulations of water in the form of ponds, lakes, wetlands, etc are also termed waterbodies. We know that 3/4th or 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water while 1/4th is with land. Similarly, the way water is associated with water bodies, yellow is associated with plateaus, green with plains and brown with mountains.

Use of Blue color in Maps

Blue color is a prominent color in depicting any water body such as a river, pond, sea, ocean, lake, etc. colors form a major role in depicting the physical features on a map. These colors have been accepted internationally by cartographers to depict the physical features on a map. Here are some colors that are used to depict the physical features:

  • Red: military sites, urban areas, roads, airports, buildings, major highways, place names, special-interest sites, and borders
  • Purple: highways
  • Brown: deserts, military reservations or bases, national parks, historical sites, and contour (elevation) lines
  • Black: place names, railroads, buildings, highways, roads, bridges and borders
  • Yellow: built-up or urban areas
  • Green: orchards, golf courses, parks, forest
