The Beating Retreat Ceremony takes place on January 29. It denotes the end of the Republic Day festivities. It is held at Vijay Chowk to mark the formal ending of the Republic Day celebrations. Beating Retreat is a spectacular ceremony which involves the defence forces. It is an old English military traditional ceremony which was started in India by Major G.A. Roberts in the 1950s.

The Beating Retreat Ceremony takes place at Raisina Hills. This ceremony was started in 1955 and Brigadier Bewoor and Major Roberts of the Ceremonial and Welfare Directorate of the Indian Army conceived the first Beating Retreat in India.
