By BYJU'S Exam Prep

Updated on: September 25th, 2023

The TCL full form is Transaction Control Language. These commands are used to control transactions carried out by DML commands as well as to ensure database consistency. The statements can be grouped into logical transactions using TCL (TCL full form: Transaction Control Language).

In this article, we will learn about the TCL full form, its commands, advantages and disadvantages. To make modifications/ changes permanent, a user must issue TCL commands. The DDL command and DML command also let a user manage some changes made to the data in a table via DML statements. Let us check more about the TCL full form in detail.

What is the Full Form of TCL?

The TCL full form is Transaction Control Language. A transaction is a series of SQL statements that are executed on the knowledge and data kept in the Database Management System (DBMS). Any transaction that is made momentarily takes place in the database (database). To make these modifications/changes permanent, a user must issue TCL commands.

TCL Commands in SQL

The TCL full form used in SQL is transaction control language. A transaction is what results from several commands being executed one after the other in a database. The user can manage the transactions that occur in a database by using certain SQL commands called as TCL commands.

The TCL commands that are most frequently used in SQL are:

  • COMMIT
  • ROLLBACK
  • SAVEPOINT

COMMIT

The data is permanently saved using this command.

If the data is not permanently stored, any DML action, such as -INSERT, DELETE, or UPDATE, can be rolled back. Therefore, the COMMIT command is used to be safe.

ROLLBACK

Using this command, you can retrieve data or return it to its most recent commit or savepoint state. You can roll back data to a specific savepoint or, if that savepoint hasn’t been completed, to the most recently committed state if the data that was entered, deleted, or altered wasn’t accurate for whatever reason.

SAVEPOINT

By temporarily preserving a transaction, this command makes it simple for a user to roll back to that point if necessary. As a result, you may use the SAVEPOINT command to identify multiple data states in a table and the ROLLBACK command to rollback to them as needed.

TCL Full Form: Advantages

A transaction is a group of SQL statements that are carried out on a database management system’s data. Every time a transaction is made, a temporary event occurs in the database. Therefore, we employ TCL (TCL full form: Transaction Control Language) commands to make the modifications permanent. Here, we have provided the advantages of TCL given below.

  • The database is simple for users to view, edit, and save changes to.
  • The required coding isn’t particularly difficult. Even novice users have little trouble using it.
  • The commands are practical and simple to remember.

TCL Full Form: Disadvantages

TCL full form is Transaction Control Language. Having discussed the TCL full form, TCL commands in SQL, and its advantages there are various disadvantages of TCL. Let us check the disadvantages of the Transaction Control Language given below.

  • When a user commits using the COMMIT command, the ROLLBACK command is useless.
  • To be able to return to a previous state, one must set a savepoint; otherwise, significant content changes will be lost.
  • For new users, locating savepoints may be challenging.
