What is an Antonym?

An antonym is a word/phrase that is the opposite of another word or phrase. The majority of antonyms, such as "good" and "bad," or "black" and "white," are quite straightforward. The prefixes "un," "in," or "non" can be used to modify some words into their antonyms, such as turning the word "likeable" into the term "unlikable." The Greek suffix - onym, which originates from the Greek onoma, or "name," is added to the Greek word anti, which means "opposite." An antonym is thus literally "opposite-name."
