SSC CGL Selection Process and Exam Pattern
SSC CGL examination is conducted in online mode. The examination is divided into different tiers namely Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3, Tier 4 (only for some posts), and document verification as the final process of examination. Candidates appearing for SSC CGL need to clear each Tier in order to get to the next stage of the recruitment. Earlier, Tier 2 and Tier 3 were conducted separately i.e., candidates appearing for Tier 3 need to meet the prerequisite of having qualified Tier 2 stage but it has seen a transformation in the preceding year. Now, if the candidate has qualified for the preliminary stage, he/she is eligible to sit for the Tier 2 and Tier 3 exams.

The SSC CGL exam pattern is as follows:

SSC CGL Tier 1
SSC CGL Tier 1 consists of 100 questions comprising different sections Quantitative aptitude, English, Reasoning, General awareness that needs to be attempted in the duration of 60 minutes. All the sections described above carry 25 questions each and there is a negative marking of 0.5 marks. Each question carries 2 marks which makes tier 1 of 200 marks.
SSC CGL Tier 2
SSC CGL Tier 2 is also MCQ-based but it has only two sections i.e., Quantitative aptitude and English Comprehension. Both the papers carry 200 marks each. Paper 1 carries 100 questions that test the candidate’s ability to solve quantitative aptitude problems in a span of 120 minutes whereas Paper 2 comprises 200 questions that test the candidate’s ability on language skills in a span of 120 minutes. These papers namely paper 1 and paper 2 are common for all the posts. For posts like AAO and ASO one needs to qualify Paper 3 and Paper 4 as well.
SSC CGL Tier 3
SSC CGL Tier 3 is subjective wherein a candidate is given 60 minutes to write a précis and an article on the given topic.
SSC CGL Tier 4
SSC CGL Tier 4 is a skill test wherein the candidates are tested upon Data Entry Speed Test & Computer Proficiency Test. It is limited to only a few posts such as auditor etc.
SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria
Nationality: In order to be eligible for the SSC CGL exam, one has to be a citizen of India, Nepal, Bhutan.
Age Limit: He or She must be between the age group of 18 years and 32 years. There is relaxation provided in the upper age limit for the reserved category candidates. To know the details regarding the age limit as per the group and SSC CGL posts check SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria.
Education Qualification: He/she should hold Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University. There are post-specific educational qualifications criteria too.
Physical Fitness: There are physical fitness criteria for some of the posts like Inspector and Sub-inspector which a candidate needs to meet failing which he/she would not be administered to the following posts: Excise Inspector/ Examiner/Preventive Officer/Inspector & Sub-Inspector in Narcotics, Sub-Inspector in National Investigation Agency (NIA) and posts in Border Roads Organisations (BRO).
