It’s a Group – B post in Enforcement Directorate famously known as ED. Enforcement Directorate mainly enforces two key acts to fight economic crimes in India namely

  1. Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA) and
  2. Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA).

Enforcement Directorate (ED) controls and checks money laundering activities in India. As an Assistant Enforcement Officer, you would join ED as a group B officer.

The enforcement directorate recruits its officers in two ways.

  • Recruits directly
  • Draws officers from other investigating agencies like Customs & Central Excise, Income Tax, Police, CBI etc. on deputation.

The Assistant Enforcement Officer post is mostly a desk/office posting job in which you would deal with files or clerical work like making reports and brochures/presentations. Desk Work

Field Work

The fieldwork of AEO is challenging in nature, much like any other field job. It entails travelling to raids and doing many day-long inspections in order to locate and search the suspect's residence. The work location of the Assistant Enforcement Officer is often in major cities, however, there are Zonal offices where one is sent for work-related initiatives.   • Headquarters: New Delhi
  • Regional offices: Mumbai, Chennai, Chandigarh, Kolkata, and Delhi

Note: Regional offices are headed by Special Directors of the Enforcement Department.

  • Zonal Offices: Ahmadabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kochi, Delhi, Panaji, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, Srinagar

Note: Zonal offices are headed by Joint Directors of the Enforcement department.

  • Sub-Zonal Offices: Bhubaneshwar, Kochi, Vishakapatnam, Kozhikode, Indore, Madurai, Nagpur, Allahabad, Raipur, Dehradun, Ranchi, Surat, Shimla, Jammu

Note: Sub–Zonal offices are headed by Deputy Directors of the Enforcement Department.

Work Timings: As an Assistant Enforcement Officer, you will be having normal office timings. Also, on raid or search, you may have to work for a long and uncertain duration.

Transfer: Yes, it is. But you don’t need to worry about the transfers because there are only a limited number of offices and they are situated in national and state capitals. So, you need not worry about a transfer to a remote area. Generally, after a transfer, you will not be disturbed for the next 3 years. That means you get to stay in a place for at least 3 years at a stretch.

Social status: It is not a uniform job but still it generates an amount of social respect. Better the post (after promotion) more will be the more powerful, as the Enforcement Department deals with a lot of money and important people.

AEO Pay Scale and Allowances

According to the rules of the 7th pay commission, an assistant enforcement officer is compensated. SSC CGL AEO post falls under the grade pay 7 category and pay scale for this position is (Rs. 44900 to 142400).

Assistant Enforcement Officer is entitled to the following additional allowances other than salary

  • DA on Total Salary Above (about 38%)
  • Transport Compensation
  • Renter's Assistance (if not provided with quarters)
  • gasoline allowance
  • Limited mobile bill
  • According to the existing pay scales, your starting income would be about 40,000 per month ( can be varied a little as per place of posting)

Within the first 8-9 years, Assistant Enforcement Officer (AEO) might expect to receive his or her first two promotions. Following that, the next promotion takes some time. All promotions are coordinated by the headquarters in Delhi. The AEO role comes with a position of authority. More respect is acquired as you advance in the hierarchy.

How to become Assistant Enforcement Directorate?

Candidates can join Enforcement Directorate (ED) as an Assistant Enforcement Officer through the SSC CGL exam. Every year, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) recruits the positions for Assistant Enforcement Officers through the SSC CGL exam. The Staff Selection Commission holds the Combined Graduate Level exam to choose individuals who fit the post of SSC AEO.

The commission has amended the selection procedure, and it will now be carried out in two tiers, Tier 1 and Tier 2. They must pass the admission exam with strong scores and a high ranking in order to be included in the final selection. An assistant enforcement officer must be paid according to pay scale 7. (Rs. 44900 to 142400).

Following induction, the applicant is assigned to the Directorate of Enforcement and Department of Revenue's headquarters, a zone office, or a sub-division office.
