When to Appear for NMAT 2021? Before or After CAT 2021?

The syllabus for CAT and NMAT are more or less the same (about 85 per cent of it is the same), so when you study for CAT, you automatically prepare for NMAT. CAT Exam is a notch higher than NMAT in terms of difficulty level but NMAT is all about speed because it is just a 2 hours examination.

NMAT is a flexible examination as you are allowed to take 2 re-tests during the 75 days window starting from October till December. The best part of this exam is that you get to choose the date, time and exam centre yourself and at your own convenience. However, this is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Now you need to think, do you plan to give both the examinations or not? This question will again depend on the B-school you wish to join. Most people choose CAT over NMAT because it offers admission to more colleges (over 120 top B-schools) than NMAT which offers admission to almost 25 top B-schools. Also, CAT offers a better set of colleges like IIMs. Some people choose only one exam to give but if you choose both, the following strategy would be preferred.

If you take the NMAT Exam first

  • Take this exam as soon as the window opens (i.e. in the week itself). The authority will release your scorecard in just 2 days after you take the exam. Analyse yourself thoroughly. Work on your shortcomings.
  • This will give you 2 benefits - Firstly, you can secure your admission to a B-school. Secondly, you can work even harder and perform even better in CAT because you are well acquainted with a real-time MBA Exam and you would try to not repeat the mistakes.
  • Then within a month or two, you will have your CAT Examination. Analyse your performance again. This will again leave with you 2 choices. First, go ahead with either of the scores. Or otherwise, let us say, you aren’t satisfied with both the exams’ scores.
  • Take a retest of NMAT soon after your CAT Examination. Remember to apply for the re-test within the 75 days window. This strategy would make sure that you get a good college anyway.

Alternative strategy

  • If you are not very comfortable preparing for 2 examinations simultaneously and want to take the examinations one by one, then you are advised to take the NMAT Exam first. Start preparing solely for NMAT from September.
  • Also, you should be taking the exam within the first week of the 75 days’ window (October 14th to December 27th 2021. If you are not very satisfied with your score, give NMAT another try. Take the re-test. It is suggested to take the re-test by the end of the third week of the window provided.
  • Now, forget about the score you get. Analyse your performance and start working on the areas where you need improvement. By, this time you will have approximately a month to prepare for CAT. Now, focus only on it. Give it your 100 per cent dedication.
  • Now after the CAT examination, if you still feel you want to give NMAT another try, you should go ahead! Use the end days of the window for the last attempt. By this time, you will be mentally calmer since would have been done and dusted with fall exams.
  • Also, you will have around 20 days to practice and a chance to improve all you that have been doing wrong.
