Vocabulary plays a very important role in enhancing your communication skills, be it written or spoken. As you glance through the newspaper every day, you come across a number of new words. Your reading exercise is impeded if you do not understand the meaning of a word, or its meaning in a given context. Such challenges could be overcome by inculcating a sound habit of reading. The habit lets you encounter something new every day in the form of words, the meaning of which you were unaware of.

In keeping with the idea of learning and scoring better in English, we bring to you our series, ‘Shape up your Vocabulary from Newspaper Wordlist’. A daily dose of this article acquaints you with commonly (and not so commonly) used English words. The series tries to feature every such word, with its meaning, contextual usage, pronunciation, synonym, antonym, proper use in sentences, etc., that could save you from sitting with a dictionary while reading. Ultimately, it facilitates smooth reading and better intake of the newspaper article.

    a. a sudden action taken by a government or people in authority to stop or limit a particular activity
  • Synonyms: restriction, suppression, restraint
  • Antonyms: hegemony
  • Usage in a sentence: Following the military coup, there has been a clampdown on press reporting in the capital.

5. Word: Parley (संधि वार्ता करना)

  • Pronunciation: pahr-lee/पार्ली
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. a discussion or conference (Noun)
    b. an informal conference between enemies under a truce, especially to discuss terms, conditions of surrender, etc. (Noun)
    c. to hold an informal conference with an enemy under a truce, as between active hostilities (Verb)
    d. to speak, talk, or confer (Verb)

  • Meaning:
    a. the regular rise and fall of the voice
    b. a set of chords (= different notes played together) at the end of a piece of music

  • Usage in a sentence: She spoke in the lyrical cadence of her East African accent.

7. Word:  Undercut (कम दाम में देना/कमज़ोर बनाना)

  • Pronunciation: uhn-der-kuht/अन्डर्कट
  • Part of Speech: Verb, Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. to cut under or beneath (Verb)
    b. to cut away material from so as to leave a portion overhanging, as in carving or sculpture (Verb)
    c. to offer goods or services at a lower price or rate than (a competing price or rate) or than that of (a competitor) (Verb)
    d. a cut or a cutting away underneath (Noun)
    e. a notch cut in a tree to determine the direction in which the tree is to fall and to prevent splitting (Noun)
