Vocabulary plays a very important role in enhancing your communication skills, be it written or spoken. As you glance through the newspaper every day, you come across a number of new words. Your reading exercise is impeded if you do not understand the meaning of a word, or its meaning in a given context. Such challenges could be overcome by inculcating a sound habit of reading. The habit lets you encounter something new every day in the form of words, the meaning of which you were unaware of.

In keeping with the idea of learning and scoring better in English, we bring to you our series, ‘Shape up your Vocabulary from Newspaper Wordlist’. A daily dose of this article acquaints you with commonly (and not so commonly) used English words. The series tries to feature every such word, with its meaning, contextual usage, pronunciation, synonym, antonym, proper use in sentences, etc., that could save you from sitting with a dictionary while reading. Ultimately, it facilitates smooth reading and better intake of the newspaper article.

  • Antonyms: aggravate, deteriorate, exacerbate, worsen
  • Usage in a Sentence: This medicine should help ameliorate the pain.

4. Word: Assert (द्दढ़तापूर्वक करना)

  • Pronunciation: uh-surt/असर्ट
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. to behave in a way that expresses your confidence, importance, or power and earns you respect from others
    b. to say that something is certainly true
    c. to do something to show that you have power
    d. to maintain or defend
  • Synonyms: Affirm, declare, claim, state, maintain
  • Antonyms: deny, reject, abandon
  • Usage in a sentence: I really must assert myself more in meetings.

5. Word: Intervention (हस्तक्षेप)

  • Pronunciation: in-ter-ven-shuh n/ इन्टर्वेन्शन
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: the action or process of intervening
  • Synonyms: interference, mediation, intrusion
  • Antonyms: noninterference, nonintervention, challenge
  • Usage in a Sentence: We would resist any armed intervention from outside in our country's affairs.

6. Word: Deploy (असरदार तरीके से इस्तेमाल करना)

  • Pronunciation: dih-ploi / डिप्लॉइ
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. move (troops or equipment) into position for military action.
    b. bring into effective action.
  • Synonyms: install, utilize, employ

  • Meaning:
    a. to explain something in a very clear way with details
  • Synonyms: explain, expound, interpret
  • Usage in a sentence: The government has so far refused to spell out its plans/policies.

9. Phrase: Tie in knots (किसी को असमंजस में डालना )

  • Pronunciation: to-tie-sum-one/टाई इन कनोट्स 
  • Meaning:
    a. to confuse someone and make them unable to explain something clearly
  • Synonyms: confound, bewilder, baffle
  • Antonyms: clarify, explain, interpret

10. Word: Aver (प्रमाणित करना)

  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. to say that something is certainly true
  • Synonyms: assert, affirm, declare
  • Antonyms: refute, deny, contradict
  • Usage in a sentence: The lawyer averred her client's innocence.

The housing societies came up with an improvised plan to save water. There were many fallouts in the previous one. Even if it was guaranteed as cost friendly, it's maintenance was way too impoverishing. To act out the new mandate, they called on the raft of society members and spelled out the new implementations on the later one. They averred its installation is costly but the maintainace part is fully cost effective and lucrative.
