Vocabulary plays a very important role in enhancing your communication skills, be it written or spoken. As you glance through the newspaper every day, you come across a number of new words. Your reading exercise is impeded if you do not understand the meaning of a word, or its meaning in a given context. Such challenges could be overcome by inculcating a sound habit of reading. The habit lets you encounter something new every day in the form of words, the meaning of which you were unaware of.

In keeping with the idea of learning and scoring better in English, we bring to you our series, ‘Shape up your Vocabulary from Newspaper Wordlist’. A daily dose of this article acquaints you with commonly (and not so commonly) used English words. The series tries to feature every such word, with its meaning, contextual usage, pronunciation, synonym, antonym, proper use in sentences, etc., that could save you from sitting with a dictionary while reading. Ultimately, it facilitates smooth reading and better intake of the newspaper article.

 3. Word: Contain (अटाना)

  • Pronunciation: kuhn-teyn/कन्टैन

  • Meaning:
    a. to hold or include within its volume or area
    b. to control or hide a strong emotion, such as excitement or anger
    c. to keep within limits and not to allow to spread
  • Synonyms: hold, include, control
  • Antonyms: exclude, unleash, vent
  • Usage in a sentence: Medical teams were scrambling to contain the virus that has already killed thousands in Latin America.

  • Meaning
    a. a list of people, countries, etc. who are considered by a particular authority or group to be unacceptable and who should be avoided and not trusted (Noun)
    b. to put someone's name on a blacklist (Verb)
  • Synonyms: blackball, ostracize, boycott, exclude 
  • Antonyms: accept, allowed, permit, welcome
  • Usage in a Sentence: They were blacklisted because of their extreme views.

5. Word: Prejudice (पक्षपात)

  • Pronunciation: prej-uh-dis/प्रेजडिस
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason (Noun)
    b. any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable (Noun)
    c. unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, especially of a hostile nature, regarding an ethnic, racial, social, or religious group (Noun)
    d. damage or injury; detriment (Noun)
    e. someone or something that prejudices you influences you unfairly so that you form an unreasonable opinion about something (Verb)

6. Phrase: Sanction (स्वीकृति देना, दण्ड)

  • Pronunciation: sangk-shuhn/ सैंगक्शन
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. a threatened penalty for disobeying a law or rule. [Noun]
    b. give official permission or approval for (an action). [Verb]
    c. an official order, such as the stopping of trade, that is taken against a country in order to make it obey international law [Noun]

    b. assumption of human form or nature.
    c. a person or thing regarded as embodying or exhibiting some quality, idea, or the like.

  • Meaning:
    a. to avoid considering something, such as an embarrassing mistake, to make it seem not important, and to quickly continue talking about something else
    b. to hide under a deceptively attractive surface or appearance
  • Synonyms: cover up, hide, disregard
  • Antonyms: emphasise, focus, interact
  • Usage in a sentence: She glossed over the company's declining profits.

10. Word: Rupture (कलह, संबंध विच्छेद, तोड़ना)

  • Pronunciation: ruhp-cher/ रप्चर

    a. break or burst suddenly. [Verb]
    b. breach or disturb (a harmonious feeling or situation). [Verb]
