Vocabulary plays a very important role in enhancing your communication skills, be it written or spoken. As you glance through the newspaper every day, you come across a number of new words. Your reading exercise is impeded if you do not understand the meaning of a word, or its meaning in a given context. Such challenges could be overcome by inculcating a sound habit of reading. The habit lets you encounter something new every day in the form of words, the meaning of which you were unaware of. 

In keeping with the idea of learning and scoring better in English, we bring to you our series, ‘Shape up your Vocabulary from Newspaper Wordlist’. A daily dose of this article acquaints you with commonly (and not so commonly) used English words. The series tries to feature every such word, with its meaning, contextual usage, pronunciation, synonym, antonym, proper use in sentences, etc., that could save you from sitting with a dictionary while reading. Ultimately, it facilitates smooth reading and better intake of the newspaper article.

    a. create (an embryo) by fertilizing an egg. 
    b. form or devise (a plan or idea) in the mind.
    c. form a mental representation of; imagine.
    d. become affected by (a feeling).

  • Antonyms: destroy, distrust, doubt, disbelieve, misapprehend
  • Usage in a sentence: He couldn't conceive of a time when he would have no job.

5. Word: Lateral (पार्श्विक)

  • Meaning
    a. of, at, towards, or from the side or sides. (Adjective)
    b. a side part of something, especially a shoot or branch growing out from the side of a stem. (Noun)
  • Synonyms: sideways, sideward, skirting, parallel
  • Antonyms: central, organic, critical, natural
  • Usage in a Sentence: Employees can expect lateral moves to different departments, to gain experience.

 

6. Word: Coerce (बलपूर्वक रोकना/मजबूर करना)

  • Meaning: a temporary alliance for combined action, especially of political parties forming a government.
  • Synonyms: alliance, union, partnership
  • Antonyms: isolation, discord, separation

9. Word: Full-fledged (पूर्ण विकसित)

  • Meaning: completely developed or established; fully-fledged.
  • Synonyms: complete, total, mature, entire
  • Antonyms: incomplete, immature
  • Usage in a Sentence: My high school was putting on a full-fledged musical theatre production.

10. Word: Combat (भिड़न्त/संग्राम करना)

  • Pronunciation: kuhm-bat/ कम्बैट
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. fighting between armed forces. [Noun]
    b. take action to reduce or prevent (something bad or undesirable). [Verb]
  • Synonyms: fight, battle, struggle
  • Antonyms: peace, accord, compromise
  • Usage in a sentence: The police are planning sterner measures to combat.
