7 Highest Mountain Ranges in India

Himalayan Range

The Sanskrit name for India's tallest mountain range, the Himalaya, is "abode of snow." The Himalayan Mountains are the newest mountain range in India and were created when two tectonic plates collided and nearly all of the world's tallest peaks are found in the Himalayan Mountain Range, which also has an average of more than 100 summits that are higher than 7,200 metres. The western and eastern ends of the Himalayas are regarded as Nanga Parbat and Namcha Barwa, respectively and at 8848 metres, Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world which is located in Nepal's Himalayan Mountains. The Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Indus are just a few of the large river systems that have their origins in the Himalayas. Himalayas also play a vital role in regulating the climate in northern India.

Karakoram and Pir Panjal Range

To the northwest and south of the Himalayan Range, respectively, are the Karakoram Range and Pir Panjal Range. The Karakoram Range is largely in the disputed territory of Pakistan and India, and both nations have staked a claim there, with a length of 500 kilometres, the Karakoram Range is home to many of the highest peaks on Earth. The Karakoram Range is home to K2, the second-highest mountain in the world at 8,611 metres. Afghanistan is home to the Hindu-Kush, a section of the Karakoram Range. Apart from the Polar Regions, Karakoram has the most glaciers. This range is home to the second and third-largest glaciers in the world, the Siachen and Biafo glaciers. This range is traversed by the Ravi, Chenab, and Jhelum rivers. Here is where Gulmarg, a significant hill station, is located.

Eastern Mountain Range or The Purvanchal Range

Even though the Purvanchal Range is not as high as the Himalayas, it can be viewed as an extension of the Himalayas in the eastern region of India because of the ways in which they were formed. The Patkai-Bum Hill, the Garo-Khasi-Jaintia Hills, and Lushai Hill are the three sections that make up the Purvanchal Range, often known as the Eastern Mountain Range (Mizo Hill). Due to these hills and the fact that it is located in the Khasi Hill, Mawsynram in Meghalaya is the wettest place on Earth. This area encompasses all of India's eastern states, also referred to as the "Seven Sisters."

The Satpura and Vindhaya Range

Central India is home to the Satpura and Vindhaya Ranges, which are adjacent to one another. These two ranges are the source of rivers like the Narmada and Tapti,with the Satpura range being the longer of the two. With some extensions into Gujarat, Chattisgarh, and Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra make up the majority of Satpura's and Vindhaya's locations. The highest points in the Vindhaya and Satpura range are Kalumar Peak (752m) and Duphgarh Peak (1350m).
Numerous popular tourist destinations, including Panchmarhi Hill Station, Kanha National Park, Amarkantak, and Omkareshwar Temple, are located within these ranges.

The Aravalli Range

The oldest mountain range in the world is the Aravalli Range.  The 800 km long Aravalli, which is also known as the "line of peaks," runs across the Indian states of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujrat. It is crucial to the Indian climate because it prevents the Thar Desert from being reached by winds delivering rain. The Aravalli Range's highest point, Guru Shikhar, is 1722 meters above sea level. The only hill station in Rajasthan, Mount Abu, is located on this range, which is known for its various tourist attractions. Also located on its southern slope is Udaipur. On the southern slopes of the Aravalli Mountains is the city of Udaipur, which is frequently referred to as the Venice of the East.

The Western Ghats

South India's Western Ghats stretch for 1600 meters from Gujrat to Kanyakumari.  The "Sahyadri Mountains" is another name for this mountain range. It includes the Cardomom, Anaimalai, and Nilgiris mountain ranges. Gujarat serves as the starting point of the Tapti River, which subsequently flows parallel to the Arabian Sea via the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. The highest peak in this range is in Kerala at 2695 meters above sea level. The Western Ghats region has a rich biodiversity and is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.  It is home to 250 reptile species, 179 amphibian species, 508 bird species, and 139 mammal species. Ooty, Bandipur National Park, and Jog Falls are popular tourist destinations. The three major rivers in this range are the Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri.

The Eastern Ghats

The Mountain range known as the Eastern Ghats runs parallel to the Bay of Bengal in the eastern part of the Indian Peninsula. In comparison to the Western Ghats, this range is less elevated and discontinuous. The range passes through the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Orissa, and Andhra Pradesh. The tallest mountain in this area is Arma Konda, which has a height of 1680 meters. Due to the fact that four of India's major rivers—Godavari, Mahanadi, Krishna, and Kaveri—fall through the Eastern Ghats and into the Bay of Bengal, they play a key part in the country's agriculture. They produce a sizable fertile area ideal for rice growing. The Tirumala Venkateshwara Temple in Andhra Pradesh is one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations on these Ghats, which are older than the Western Ghats.
