RBI Grade B vs Other Government Jobs

To make the comparison more apt, let’s first see what are the other government jobs, which are at par with RBI Grade B Officer.

Government Jobs

SBI/ IBPS Officers

SSC CGL Group B Posts

UPSC Group A

Railways and other PSUs

For a better and understandable comparison of different job profiles, we will compare the different jobs based on four different aspects, namely, Salary, Promotion, Work-life Balance, and Power (Authority). Let us have a look at the RBI Grade B officer profile, salary, and career progression.

RBI Grade B Salary

Check here the details of the RBI Grade B salary and perks. Currently, the maximum CTC given to the RBI officer is around 18 Lacs in metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai which is much higher than any other banking job.

RBI Grade B Officers Promotion Opportunities

Directly recruited Grade B officers have a good chance to reach the level of Deputy Governors. RBI conducts various internal examinations for promotion to the next stage (RBI generally appoints an outsider for the apex post). The hierarchy level is given below.

RBI Grade B Officers Work-life Balance

Life is manageable at RBI as there are normal working hours, unlike any other PSU bank. One can easily manage other personnel activities as all the weekends (Saturday and Sunday) are off (except for some which are directly related to banking operations viz. NEFT etc.).

Power (Authority) of RBI Grade B Officers

No doubt few powers are given to the officers based on the nature of their work. They do have some say in banking operations but everything depends on how they make use of it. Apart from this, they are considered just like any other employee of the government.

We will now have a comparative analysis of RBI Grade B with various other government job posts.

RBI Grade B Officers vs SBI PO/ IBPS PO Officers

Candidates are generally confused about the type of job that they should opt for, as sometimes they do not have complete information about their profiles. Today we are discussing a detailed comparison between RBI Grade B and other Government Jobs, including Bank Exams, some profiles of SSC as well as UPSC.

This comparison has been drawn on the basis of few parameters and this will definitely help aspirants to decide the path for their careers. This article will provide them with complete information to make a well-informed decision about their career.

Salary

Compared to SBI/ IBPS POs, RBI Grade B Officers are way ahead. They get more salary, more perks, and allowances.

Profiles

IBPS PO

SBI PO

RBI Grade B

Basic Pay

Rs. 36,000/-

Rs. 41,960/-

Rs. 55,200/-

In-Hand Salary (Approx.)

Rs. 53,000/-

Rs. 58,000/-

Rs. 1,08,404/-

Note: Salary may vary as per the city.

Promotion

The career growth opportunities or the chances to get the promotion to the next level are almost similar in both these profiles. However, the chances of frequent transfers are very low in RBI.

In IBPS/ SBI, a directly recruited probationary officer can reach the top position (We have Previous Chairman of SBI Smt. Arundhati Bhattacharya as an example). In RBI Grade B Officers, this is not the case. The candidate for the apex post is appointed by the Government and is generally an outsider.

Work-life Balance

The working hours in RBI are quite well-defined. RBI Grade B Officers also enjoy the benefit of leaves on Saturdays as well. RBI promotes a healthy work-life balance among its employees.

POs or other Officers in the bank usually don’t have defined timings. The job of a PO involves frequent transfers. The bank branches are also located in remote areas, unlike RBI offices. Probationary Officers in banks are also required to undergo mandatory rural posting. The RBI Grade B Officer has a defined work profile compared with a bank officer. An officer in the bank may need to perform various functions ranging from clerical work, cashier or any work that is entrusted to him/ her.

Power (Authority)

Bank officers have the power to sanction the loans and other credits. However, their responsibilities are higher as they must keep in check, the compliance of the laws and regulations. (We have seen in the recent PNB case where some officers have misused their powers.)

RBI Grade B Officers vs SSC CGL Group B Posts

SSC CGL Group B Posts include Inspectors in Income Tax, Customs, Assistants in Ministry of External Affairs, AAOs in CAG, and various other departments like ED, CSS, CGDA, AFHQ, etc.

Salary

After the 7th Pay Commission, the salaries of the central government employees were increased, but this increase was the lowest ever. Consequently, the salaries increased, but still, these are not at par with the RBI Grade B Officers.

Promotion

The promotions are very slow in SSC CGL Posts. In some departments, candidates get only 2 promotions in a lifetime.

Work-life Balance

Work-life balance is similar in almost both these jobs barring some departments like the Department of Posts (where they work is similar to banks) or Customs (where the workload is more). While Central Government is facing an acute shortage of staff, RBI has adequate staff at its disposal.

Power (Authority)

Some of the posts of SSC, especially jobs like Inspectors in CBIC, Income Tax, or CBI enjoy more discretionary powers, which is not the case with RBI Grade B Officers.

RBI Grade B Officers vs UPSC Group A Posts

For applicants seeking government jobs, the RBI Grade B and UPSC Group A are two of the most difficult tests. Aspirants who want to work in banking tend to prefer the RBI Grade B, whilst those who want to work in the country’s administration tend to prefer the UPSC exam.

The majority of candidates are uncertain which path to take. So, we shall analyse both exams in different ways here.

Salary

As already mentioned for the SSC profiles, even after the hike of the 7th Pay Commission, the salaries of the central government employees were not at par with RBI Grade B Officers.

Promotion

Although the scope of promotions is similar to both the profiles, this is slightly better for RBI Grade B officers. You can be at the topmost position in UPSC jobs if you join the service at the early age of 24-25.

However, in RBI, the candidate for the apex post is appointed by the Government and is generally an outsider.

Work-life Balance

Work-life balance is almost similar in both these jobs, barring few departments. Comparatively, the work-life balance is better in RBI because of a sufficient number of employees, which is usually not the case with central government jobs.
Another aspect is transferred. Most of the UPSC Jobs have a mandatory transfer policy of 3 years, which again proves that RBI Grade B is better in terms of work-life balance.

Power (Authority)

All UPSC officers involve in public dealings in some way or the other and therefore have more powers as compared with RBI Grade B Officers. However, with RBI, if you will join as Grade B Officer, you will have a greater say.
