RBI Assistant Prelims Numerical Ability Preparation Strategy

The Numerical Ability Section carries a weightage of 35 marks in the RBI Assistant Prelims Exam 2022. There will be 35 questions i.e. each question carries one mark. As the competition is increased, your focus should be on achieving 28+ marks in this section to be on the safer side. Before moving forward you should be completely aware of the RBI Assistant syllabus and RBI Assistant exam pattern.

1. Simplification and Approximation –

Expected Number of Questions: 10-15

Level of Questions – Easy to moderate

Preparation tips :

  • This section carries the maximum weightage in the RBI Assistant Prelims exam. Also, it consists of less time-consuming questions that make it the most scoring topic.
  • In this topic, the questions are based on Basic rules of BODMAS [B: Brackets (first solve small brackets, then middle brackets and then large brackets), O: Of, D: Division, M: Multiplication, A: Addition, S: Subtraction ]
  • In the questions of Simplification, always do the calculation with the exact digit. You should neither approximate the question nor the answer.
  • In approximation questions, you can approximate the question as well as the answer given in the option, but up to a certain limit. For example, if the digit is 4.3, take it as 4, but if the digit is 4.5 or more than 4.5, you can take it as 5. You need to find the nearest value in approximation questions, not the exact answer.
  • You need to have good and speedy calculation skills for this topic. To sharpen your calculation skills, learn tables(1-30) , squares(1-50) , cubes(1-30) .
  • You should be thorough with the concepts of  Number System,  Square & Cube, Fractions & Decimals, Surds & Indices.
  • Also learn the techniques and short tricks to calculate squares, cubes, square root, and cube root.

You can practice the most expected questions in the RBI Assistant Test series of BYJU’S Exam Prep’s Bank Test series.

2. Number Series –

Expected Number of questions: 5

Level of Questions: Easy to Moderate

Preparation tips :

  • Number series is a very scoring topic. In this topic, two types of questions can be asked –

1. Find out the missing number in the given series.
2. Find out the wrong number in the given series.

  • In both types of questions, the given series follows a specific pattern. The candidates are required to observe the particular pattern and find out the missing/wrong number in the series accordingly.
  • In missing number questions, a number at the start/middle or end of the series will be missing. You will be asked to find out the missing number according to a specific pattern.
  • In wrong number questions, all the numbers in a series will be given, but one of them will not follow the pattern, which is followed by the remaining numbers. The candidate needs to find out the wrong number in the series. This is also known as Odd-one out question.
  • Try to practice a good number of questions from this topic so that you can be familiar with most of the patterns.
  • There are various patterns in number series questions, but some patterns are very common and often repeated in questions such as Square Pattern, Square root pattern, Cube pattern, cube root pattern, Prime Number pattern, Pattern based on Differences, Pattern based on double differences, Table of any number pattern, Geometric Series pattern, etc.
  • Following questions were asked in RBI Assistant Prelims Exam 2016 –
  • 7,21,5,23,3,?
  • 15,22,32,46,65,?
  • 9,10,18,27,91,?
  • 17,23,35,59,?,205
  • 6,7,16,51,208,?

Preparation tips

  • Data Interpretation involves Bar graph, Tabulation, Pie Chart, Line graph, Mixed type, and Paragraph DI(Caselets) topics.
  • To have a good grip on DI questions, it is essential to be acquainted with the concepts of Percentage, Ratio and Proportion, and Average. Almost all the questions of DI are based on the concept of these topics.
  • To master this section, the candidate must be thorough with a percentage to fraction conversion, fraction to percentage conversion, short tricks of conversion, Tables (at least up to 20), Squares, cubes, Square roots.
  • Options play a great role in DI questions. In some questions, an exact to-the-point answer is not required. The options are given in such a manner that approximation can be applied. So you must look at the options before answering the question to answer questions smartly.
  • Read the instructions in the Data Interpretation questions very carefully before attempting the question.
  • Also, do not start solving the whole table/Bar/Pie chart given. Only focus on the questions which are asked and solve only that data.
