Rapid Prototyping and Additive Manufacturing in New Product Development

HI GRADIANS,

Hope you are doing well and studying Hard for your Examinations. There is a saying" The advance of technology is based on making it fit in so that you don't really even notice it, so it's part of everyday life.” So, Rapid Manufacturing has gained a lot of momentum in recent times. Today, when there is a lot of requirement for customization, people want exactly the things according to requirement when machines like CNC have been developed but seem to slow has brought the term rapid prototype into the front and now I have to rephrase this term also now today people talk more about mass customization. For example, I would like to have a spoon that could cater for my requirement only Similarly I would like to have a car that could fulfil my requirement only. When we talk about mass customization we cannot sacrifice time and we cannot sacrifice cost requirement. So, we are supposed to work to the expectation of the customer both in terms of the money required for the product and in terms of timely delivery. So in this situation, we are pushed from mass production and batch production to mass customised production. we cannot change our machines according to every batch hence we have a Technology developed So, this mass customised production is termed or is redrafted and given a terminology called Rapid Manufacturing.

For example, I would like to have a spoon that could cater for my requirement only similarly a shoe that can cater for my requirement or I would like to have a car that could fulfil my requirement only. Future manufacturing is going to be more towards the mass customization world. When we talk about mass customization we cannot sacrifice time and we cannot sacrifice cost requirement. So, we are still supposed to work to the expectation of the customer both in terms of the money required for the product and in terms of timely delivery. So in this situation, we are pushed from mass production to batch production to mass customised production. we cannot change our machines according to every batch hence we have a Technology developed So, this mass customised production is termed or is redrafted and given a terminology called Rapid Manufacturing

DEFINITION - The definition according to Additive Manufacturing by ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials ) is “Process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer, as opposed to subtractive manufacturing methodologies, such as traditional machining” can also be termed as Rapid Prototyping, This term was used at the beginning of the professional use of the technology because the main application was the manufacturing of prototypes, mock-ups and sample parts.

HOW DOES RAPID PROTOTYPING WORK?

Rapid Prototyping describes a lot of different manufacturing technologies in the same machine. The most used Rapid prototyping is additive manufacturing.  However, other technologies that are generally used for Rapid Prototyping are casting, moulding, extruding, and high-speed machining.

While using additive manufacturing for the rapid prototyping process there are various established processes that can be used to build prototypes.

These processes are given below :

  • Subtractive: A chunk of material is sliced to create the preferred form using grinding, turning, or milling is called subtractive manufacturing.

  • Compressive: A semi-solid or liquid material is altered into the preferred form prior to hardening, just like with casting, moulding, or compressive sintering to a pre-defined shape.
APPLICATIONS OF RAPID PROTOTYPING

These processes are used by product designers, engineers, and development teams for the rapid development of parts as per their requirements. Prototypes are extremely beneficial for product designers because the designer can visualise, design, and develop the manufacturing process prior to mass-producing it.

Rapid prototyping has been seen around since the late 1980s and was originally used to create parts and scale models mainly in the automotive industry. It has been brought to use in a wide range of industries such as medical and aerospace. The Dental industry is where Rapid Prototyping is used to create various dental mouldings such as crowns.

Finally, rapid tooling is another application of Rapid Prototyping that enables a person to produce a product quickly and cheaply.  In rapid tooling, a Part like an Ultrasound Sensor wedge is Manufactured and used as a tool in a different process.

What is 3D Printing?

3D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file on software copy. This is the process in which we creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes. In an additive process, an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the object is created according to the soft copy or a copy of another prototype product .3D printing is the opposite of subtractive manufacturing which is cutting out hollowing out a piece of metal or plastic with for instance a milling machine.3D printing enables you to produce complex shapes using less material than traditional manufacturing methods like CNC or manufacturing process like casting.
